Description

Dispersed campsites with a scenic view of the mountain are located before entering the gate to the state park. Turn right on the dirt road, accessible for all vehicles.

Cell carriers: I have two bars of LTE with AT&T and Sprint.

Fresh water is available past the gate. The gate is currently closed until Nov 30, 2020, but you can still walk past it to fill whatever you can carry.

What a magic place, sunset is beautiful, but also the sunrise coming up behind the mountains, so peaceful. Stayed 2 nights.

Quiet, packed with beautiful sunsets and views of thw mountains.

We came here as all the camping sites were booked, and we like it! Lot of space, lot of big rigs, with generators, but the place is big so you can be away from them.. You can get free water just before the campground..

Dope campsites. Parked our 20ft camper down in a bottom along with our friends in a truck camper. Sunset is gorgeous looking towards it or the mountains behind you.

I stayed here for a few weeknights, so I'm not sure how it is on the weekends. But, my stay was quiet and uneventful. There were several larger rigs in what seemed to be a parking lot area, but there were also several more private nooks throughout, and I managed to get a nice spot with a fire pit. Before arriving here, I had tried to get a spot over at Holloman Lake, but the wind and smell of the lake were unbearable. Granted, I arrived on a windy day so the wind at this spot was a struggle as well but definitely noticeably better than on the lake. I literally don't think I could have pitched my tent at Holloman. I got good reception here, and as a solo female felt completely safe.

Old gravel pit creates a unique camping experience. No facilities but low areas can give a feeling of seclusion. 3 bars of signal on highlands, 1 bar in the "pits" .

A dozen van lifers here today. Oliver Lee park is just up the road and they have hot showers.

Report Check-In

Good, clean place. Easy access with my 2WD station wagon.

Good alternate for established camps during the apocalypse. Lots of folks stacked in an old borrow pit. Probably 12 vehicles from 5th wheel trailers to vans here. Good site for a night or two.

Decent amount of people here. Wouldn't try to come after dark, can be hard to see where the spots are. Can hear trains and dogs but not bad. Lots brought RV's. State park was closed. Great views.

I tent camped which was hard to stake down. Watch out for glass.
