Description

Important : Campsite is open during Seal Reserve timing: 8am to 5pm. Arrive before 5pm in order to check-in! Brilliant location about 1km from the main seal colony, set back 50m from the beach. Many seal cubs on the beach at present. 2m windbreak and deck area with table and bench. Long drop toilets (poor condition), no water. No smell from the seal colony today but plenty of flies! If the weather is good and only a light wind this is a perfect campground, in bad weather I imagine it’s awful. MTC 3G, N$100pppn

Latest Check-Ins

The toilets are still in poor if any condition. It is a pity that all other facilities, except the facilities at the gate are in a bad condition.

We could still smell the seals from there, many green flies while we ate, shit pit without door.
But very quiet, nice, table and BBQ, beach at 50m

Very basic campground but great location close to the seal colony and right on the beach. Each site has a windbreaker and seating area. There are pit latrines but they are not well maintained - the doors had rusted off when we were there! No smell for us from the seals and we enjoyed it as a stop over after the skeleton coast drive, heading south.

A bit of a utilitarian campsite, frequented mostly by fishermen, and quite crowded. But was fine as a stopover on the way up the skeleton coast (in fact it is one of the only places to camp!). Thankfully the smell of the seal colony can't be smelt from camp, and it is relatively well protected from the wind. Really nice bar at the lodge with views over the sea. Didn't try the restaurant

Report Check-In

We got to the reserve around 6pm when a guy at the gate said camping is not available inside it anymore so we slept at Cape Cross Lodge Campsite. Next day we went to visit the seal reserve and the lady at reception said that YES campsite is open BUT you must arrive before 5pm in order to check in! I don't regret not sleeping here though because I would probably not sleep well with the sound of the big ocean waves but it can be a nice experience to stay late around seal colony area.

It seems this campsite is closed at the moment (or permanently?). Only option is to camp at Cape Cross Lodge Campsite.

Advantage of this basic campground is your access to the seals colony after 17:00 with Schakals screening for young seals at sunset.
Charme of your stay will depend a lot on weather conditions.
5 places each with wind shield, table, brai.
Prices will be increased on April 1st 2021.
