Description

This is the swimmable source of a river with crystal clear, 24⁰C water. It's also the trailhead for the Aguateca ruins (guided 45 mins on foot one way). During weekends, families come here to swim, BBQ and drink. There are toilets, picknick tables, palapas and fire pits. It's in the jungle, with the fauna that comes with it (birds, mammals, insects).

The last stretch of track is not on Openstreet-, nor on Google- nor on Apple maps. Have your GPS guide you to an unpaved road that starts North in between the residential blocks in Las Pozas but then goes North-west. By the time you're close to the waypoint, look out for a track on your right (that is not on the map), with a white, bulletholed and completely faded sign. Follow it, take a left after you've opened (and closed) a barb wired fence. The track can be muddy and two wheel drivers left their vehicle just before the last water/mud pool.

Claro LTE coverage.

Original: We found this place looking for the aguateca ruins. It’s a small dirtroad on your right if your coming from Las Pozas. It has a big white sign in front if the road that says aguateca. It’s a beautiful awesome place with alot of mayan history. We camped right next to the river where we could hear the monkeys howl all day. The river is great for bathing and connecting with the local community. If you want to hike to aguateca it’s 100q for the guide and 20q per person to enter the ruins. For camping its 25q per person. And you can basically put you tent, van or hammock anywhere you want. Definitely a place that i would recommend if you want to experience jungle life!!

Report Check-In

It has been raining more than usual the last days - more mud on the road and the spring water is not as clear. But we had a great Saturday here with Carlos' extended family and the daytime visitors. Carlos makes cheese and sold us fish. He, his children and his mother are very welcoming. We loved it here.

We arrived at 10 am and paid GTQ 50 per person for day and night time use. Claro LTE coverage.

I'm really glad I checked this place out!

Carlos lives there with his family and takes care of the area. He is a humble and educated fellow who tries to protect the jungle and wetlands from deforestation. Unlike other places you won't see a lot of trash there because he cares about nature and picks it up. By visiting Camp Aguateca you're helping Carlos in his endeavor.

A small river passes by right next to the camping area. The water is clear and refreshing. Howler monkeys and spider monkeys hang out all around the camp.

Carlos can give you a tour of the Aguateca ruins for 100Q. It's really worth it. He is a great guide and knows the history very well.

The road to get there is a bit rough but any car or van will make it, no problem. During the rainy season there's a few patches that are muddy but easily negotiable anyway.
