Edge of grass-covered prairie with eastern overlook of gorgeous canyon of Badlands. Amazing and other-worldly here. Easy 2wd low clearance to "Sheep Table Mountain" where we saw a class A RV. Go past the sign indicating "high clearance vehicles only". The road is smooth, though hump between tire tracks requires high clearance at points.
Verizon and AT&T signals.
Even though this is technically within the National Park, the NPS does allow camping here. Last verified October 2022.

Great FREE spot. Went past the “high clearance” sign. I was pulling a pop up camper. Would not recommend. I have a lifted tundra and made it up wit the camper. Stayed 1 night. No service. Great stars.
Report Check-InJust WOW!!! The drive in to this place was rough (rocky) and we were driving with our tear drop camper. It was so surreal. We got here at sunset and drove along the roads lined up with sunflowers on each side of the road. The sunset was spectacular. We parked in a small pull out area before the high clearance sign with 1 other trailer. This spot could probably fit 1-2 more cars. Lots of mosquitoes here and it was super windy! Overall, an amazing spot to camp at.
Report Check-InThe main dirt road coming in is well maintained. Eventually, there is a sign recommending high-clearance 4x4. At that point, the road narrows and becomes rutted in some areas. The conditions were dry for me, but I could see wet conditions being a bit more of a challenge.
I actually stopped a bit further down the road. Nearer to a trail head.
The site was very clean, and the views were spectacular. I only saw one other vehicle, and it was just passing through. I had the place to myself for the evening. It was a bit windy, about 15mph with guests considerably higher.
Went past the pullout and down the dirt road onto the table (where signs advise high clearance vehicles only). Stayed one night. We have a truck with a slide in camper. We’re 11k lb and 11ft tall. The road wasn’t very technical, any jeep or Subaru can make it, but the ruts and our high center of gravity caused some sway and lean that kept it exciting.
The area is clean, no litter, hope it stays that way. Did see some fresh tracks through the grass. Hope that’s not people blazing new roads since that’ll get the area closed.
The park website does say dispersed camping is allowed without a permit but also that campsites need to be away from roads and not visible. Gray area?
Stayed two nights at the lookout just before the sign "high clearance needed". Amazing sunset and views, a bit windy. Only saw 5 cars during the day. Nice spot to look at prairie dogs and coyotes. Please keep it clean!
Report Check-InWe went all the way to the end of the track (43.66794° N, 102.57510° W), where you have a view to the North AND some trees and bushes to protect you from the wind. Some parts of the track are tricky (and we found evidence of someone losing their engine oil after crashing on a bank). Beautiful sights and not another soul around.
Update: went to see a park ranger at the visitor center. Even though this is technically within the National Park, they do allow camping here. (This is, until it becomes messy and then "no camping" signs will pop up... Take out what you bring in.)
Report Check-InWow, insanely gorgeous! A pretty long trek on washboards and then some maneuvering once you get to the top. But, made it just find in my ford transit. Pretty good cell signal! I would have been able to work up here, but had to head to lower elevation to escape a storm. Definitely a much more private and breathtaking camp spot than spot of the life crowded spots in the badlands area.
There's a grass road once you get to the tricky road that is a lot easier to take! Assume lots of people are taking that now because the potholes on the main track are massive.
Report Check-InAbsolutely awesome spot. Follow the tracks past the high clearance sign - tracks aren’t very level and require descent clearance. Quite a few pull-offs once you reach the canyon edge.
The first one sports a short path down to a little grassy butte in the canyon, but had fire ants. We stopped at the second pull-off. Amazing views, but super windy. Watching the sunset and sunrise was magical.
Would have love to explored further - end of the road on google satellite view looks like it has even bigger canyon views.
Report Check-InAmazing place!! Not crowded when we were here, great views, and excellent service (Verizon). I was able to join zoom meetings without any issues. Close to the park enternece, too.
Report Check-InExcellent spot with a view and very quiet. Road is bumpy and is about 3-4 miles off the main road. Low clearance vehicles will do just fine until you get to the posted signs about high clearance at the viewpoint. Take it slow as the gravel is loose and we slid once. Completely exposed so if you don’t have AC (like us) it’s quite hot. View is unbeatable in the badlands.
Report Check-InWithout question the best place we boon-docked period. Backdrop is the stuff of dreams, we had the place to our selves:) past the high clearance signs when it’s dry it’s rough but ok, if wet guessing it would be loads of fun. At the end of the road is a plateau where guessing 5 or so sites that people have camped in the past. If you are in the area make the effort it’s gorgeous.
Report Check-Ingorgeous views. good place to watch sunset and sunrise. my Outback made it just fine despite a bit of rain in the afternoon before coming here. was sliding a little and the grass was rubbing the undercarriage but didn't scrape on the ground at all. well worth it but if it rained a lot it might be more of a hassle.
Report Check-InAbsolutely spectacular! This is one of our all time favorite overlanding spots, if you’re in the area we can’t recommend it enough! The sunrises and sunsets are so beautiful! We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Report Check-InDefinitely a beautiful spot if you’re willing to drive there. Made it in a Promaster but stayed on the grass route (to the left) passed the “high clearance” sign.
Report Check-InThis place is special. The view is stunning at every angle. The road is rough but doable. Maybe not for a large RV though. A van might make it but it will take you awhile and you’ll need to go off road a bit. I only saw a hand full of people and everyone is just out enjoying themselves.
Report Check-InGreat spot, although windy. Beautiful views, road was easy to get into if you pay attention.
Report Check-Inbeautiful spot. road is a little dicey, we had to stay out of the ruts or take the better road next to the existing road. unfortunately we still had strong verizon signal. but the views! and so quiet...
Report Check-InBeautiful beautiful camp, road is fine up to the sign has been some erosion on the road Jeep made it no problem not sure about vans
Report Check-InAmazing views and really cool drive! Would definitely recommend high clearance past the indicating sign, but we didn’t need 4x4 because it was dry. Our 26ft sprinter made it no problem, but not sure I would recommend any big RV campers. 3 bars Verizon LTE. Based on park map this area is NP land but there were no signs we saw that prohibited camping. We saw others camping as well and had no problems.
Report Check-Inexcellent campsite made it back here with the Casita trailer beautiful view. the road was very possible with anything as big as a pickup truck or any four-wheel drive. it was all dry when we came through here no mud.
Report Check-InEdge of grass covered prairie with eastern overlook of gorgeous canyon of Badlands. Amazing and other-worldly here. Easy 2wd low clearance to "Sheep Mt. Overlook" where we saw a class A RV. Go past the sign indicating "high clearance vehicles only". The road is smooth, though hump between tire tracks requires high clearance at points.
