Description

We stopped first at Comanche Campground, which was full, and the camp host was kind enough to give us a detailed map of Forest Service Roads that indicated dispersed camping areas.
There are many service roads all around here that allow dispersed camping. We camped on South Dakota Forest Service Road #288.1A
We took the first open spot where there was evidence that others had been. No fires allowed on any SD forest area due to severe drought conditions. Very quiet, a few cars and ATVs before dark is all we heard.
We got here on a holiday weekend when all other campgrounds were chock full and it was a delight to be so secluded.
We parked our 27’ Skoolie with no problem, quite level at this particular spot. Longer rigs would fit as well. There are many more spots further on but we liked the first one and didn’t go any further.
Both Verizon and AT&T:
No bars. Can only get a text, no other service available.

Awesome spot. It’s open, flat, almost level (leveling jacks had no trouble making level), and there is plenty of room room to turn a big rig around. We fit in with a 44’ 5th wheel and truck (63’ total) with no problem. There is a fenced area and corral here, which gaiagps indicates as private property, but the open camp spot is forest service land.

While we were here some people came and dropped off cows in the corral. We asked them if they owned the property and minded if we stayed near their corral. They were not the owners, just using the corral with permission, but said they were aware this is NF land and no problem camping here. They also thanked us for asking. Nice people.

This is a beautiful spot. No one else here on Labor Day weekend. Very quiet, little traffic on Lightning Creek road. No traffic on the smaller FS road.

There is little to no cell service in this area. I saw one bar at times but mostly none. I did not try putting up the Weboost to see if that helped.

If staying in this area again I’d definitely come back here.
