Volcanic Crater about 2 miles off Historic RT 66.
Rough road up, but can be handled by any vehicle if you go slow. Lots of BLM land before the crater, but plenty of parking spots and camping locations if you go up. The property is marked private, but the gates are open and the public does have access. I spent one day and two nights here exploring all the lava tubes and the craters (one major one and multiple smaller ones)

Report Check-In

Based on previous postings we drove the 2 miles of rough road to find that the gate was locked and no trespassing signs. There are some flat areas where boondocking is a possibility. Not sure if it is permitted. We opted to continue east on Route 66 to visit and camp at Amboy crater

Report Check-In

Pretty cool, although, as of today, the campgrounds are blocked off by a new gate. More signs.

Report Check-In

As described before, intriguing volcanic crater, easy to get lost so watch where you’re going. The road in was once paved, but over years and with you since become very rough. But not a problem for my Dodge grand Caravan.

Attention restez sur le chemin j’ai enlisé mon vr le sable est mou dans ce secteur !!!!

Nice spot if you find yourself alone. Some train noise at night. Camping beyond the gate, near the base killed our Verizon service, but it’s strong most everywhere else. The Lava Tubes/Caves are fun, but not close to road. Had to Google a bit to find info. All around a nice overnight.

Report Check-In

Just as described. Easy to get to and right off the highway!

Outstanding place! Easy drive up. Plenty of flat spots. You can see and hear US 40 but it’s not distracting and you can watch mile long freight trains go by. Plenty to explore. I didn’t see anyone!

Report Check-In

pretty easy drive in and up to the camp spot. driving up in the crater would be pretty hardcore. surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery with a freight train rolling down the line. huge private property sign on the way in, but no one in sight. fire pits. flat ground. A+ in my book

Great sandy camping locations all over, interspersed with islands of volcanic rock. No one else there Friday night, early on Saturday a convoy of trucks rolled in and set up right next to us. Far enough away that noise wasn't an issue and they were quiet anyway. Place is more popular than expected. The crater looms above to the south and is a fun activity for kids to burn off some energy.

This is a truly gorgeous location with beautiful desert landscape stretching out all around you. Check out glove cave/cove too while you’re here, really cool volcanic mini cave to explore

Report Check-In

The road before the "gates" (at around 2 miles) is all BLM, after the gates is technically private land. I wouldn't drive to the top unless I was confident in loose sand, but exploring it on foot is fun. You could go sledding. Along the road there are lots of pulloffs, some with fire pits, that are far enough from the highway that it is quiet (except for trains). The road itself is awful, but manageable by any vehicle if you go slow.
