Description

FREE BIG SUR CAMPING with VIEWS just past Plaskett Creek Campground on the left-hand side headed south on this PCH in Big Sur. coming northbound, it’ll be a right turn onto a dirt road just before the campground entrance. drive up the road and you will find legal free dispersed campsites throughout this road on the national forest. when you first turn in you will see a sign “no camping, no fires” and another that says “locked gate ahead”. do not pay any mind to these - there are certain stretches along this road that are private property so these just warn you of that but it is still perfectly OK to camp on forest land. drive past those signs and you will come to a steep curve in the road where you see a brown billboard with fire restrictions listed. we parked and set up camp along this stretch and there were about 4 other groups already here. you can continue on up the road to continue searching for more sites but it gets quite steep and the road is a little rougher so we didn't feel like hauling our non-4x4 up the hill, though it’s definitely doable. though there really isn’t cell service in the area, our site managed to pick up a bar or two of AT&T and keep it every once in a while. saw a guy here with his puppy so dogs are a go :)

Plaskett Road is permanently closed!

Report Check-In

Did find the road, but it was closed. Don’t know if it is temporary or permanently closed. Stayed at the campground instead as it was too late to look for another spot.

Report Check-In

I wasn't able to find this place.

Written directions are accurate but coordinates are wrong. These are in the sea ☹

We had a hard time finding anywhere to camp in the area, but finally found this spot and gave it a try. Arrived just before midnight, cooked a quick dinner, and went to sleep. When we woke up in the morning, I unzipped my tent only to realize we were above the clouds. What a beautiful view.

This was a great place to crash for a night during our journey of HW1. I’ll absolutely be back here next time I’m in the area.

Report Check-In

Road entrance as described. 100ft south of the park entrance. Bumpy dirt road but our little hatchback made it up fine.

Stayed with a half dozen other cars less than a half mile up. Another 1-2 dozen cars drove past us further up between 6 and 8 pm.

We can hear birds chirping, a guitar playing, and some quiet conversation around the bend. Seals barking in the distance and the occasional car on the highway 200ft below us.

Pitched our tent on the shoulder of the road but those who got here earlier found hideaways behind trees uphill or below the road grade.
