Description

Brazilian border control. If you need a visa they are available in Chui at the consulate. Proceed to migracion (counter 1). Then go to counter 2 to present your vehicle papers. We were asked how long we planned to stay, where we were going, where we planned to exit Brazil, and the value of our vehicle. We were (after about 10mins wait) given a temporary import permit for our 90day stay.

Uruguayan customs is on the far side of Chuy. Can't miss it :) the area between the two border controls is a free trade zone.

You MUST visit migration/customs on both sides of the border and it is easy to miss the station. The process took about 15 minutes on both sides. Very friendly border officials. Very quiet on a Friday morning. On BOTH sides, the usual procedure is: visit migration office first, hand in or obtain your TIP next.

Urg-> Bra
Follow signs for autos into a small parking lot. Head into the building following signs for immigration. We were lucky to have 3 helpful, English speaking employees here today. A nice guy seated at the entrance showed us exactly where to go and what to do for immigration stamps in our passports first where the agent chatted with us in English. On to aduana where the guy from the entrance asked the value of the vehicle in $US and took our vehicle paper and driver passport to another employee behind a window at a computer. The document isn’t called a TIP here. The paper is titled in English “Concession Term of Temporary Admission of Goods” The vehicle info is simply put into the description line for imported goods along with the value of the vehicle.
If you don’t get lucky and have a helpful guide it’s straightforward as there are good signs and everything is in one small building.
We arrived around 830 am on a Tuesday and had to wait 45 minutes or so until the employee that does vehicle paperwork arrived for the aduana part. Otherwise it was a quick 15-20 minute event for us.

It took us a while to do this border not because of queues, there was noone here, but it wasn't clear what we had to do. If you are in a foreign vehicle, make sure you stop at the Uruguyan Aduana (google maps it) and get an exit stamp, then proceed to the Brazilian side where first you go to the passport desk and present your covid certificate and passport. These guys are the Federal Police and don't know about TIP, you have to insist on getting one. There's another desk that didn't have anyone behind. They got the attendant to come and he spoke English and took our vehicle document and passport and made us a TIP. Everyone else didn't speak any English or Spanish to come prepared with Google translated screenshots!

Just a warning for anyone passing from Brazil to Uruguay (I wasn't sure where else on the map to pin this and it makes as much sense as anywhere else) there are no cashpoints after you leave Chuy so make sure you get cash while you are here! There are some points in Punta Del Diablo, Coronilla and beyond and they are supposed to be open from December- we are here on 4.12.19 and they are all still locked. Locals can get money at the petrol station at Coronilla but they don't take international cards. Very annoying! We had to make the 100km round trip to come back...

very easy going, clean, and frendly border.
I pass it at 10 a.m. by motorcycle, they ask what is the value of your veichle and they print on the TIP the amount in reales that you have to pay if you do not leave with your veichle. So I think is better to declare less ...... mine was 2000 usd and they calculate more than 2000....may be because they know that people declare less.......IMHo
