Description

Fausto is a very honest guide for the somoto cayon. He lives in the small village near the canyon. He asked 15$ p.p. for the 4h tour with good equipment (others asked 25$). You can stay next to the small houses of his large family for free. If you want they will be glad for a tipp. We stayed 2days and had a great tour to the canyon.

The canyon and the tour are indeed incredible. Very beautiful and it makes fun. We did the tour with Fausto jun. a very nice guy and the son of Fausto, who is also very nice, indeed, but he had another tour at that time. We enjoyed it. There are some long ways to swim, but it is no problem, just want to mention it. Also because of shoes (we swam with our old sport shoes) and clothes (he carried the phone etc. and the clothes in his waterbag). It is difficult to do the tour without a guide, even if you know it (see the map photo), because one part is with a boat and the guide have to call it.
We fitted into the place and we are big rig (3 axle and 3,85 m high). They lift all the cables for you.
BUT: It is not quiet! If you need and love quiet nights and privacy, the place is nothing for you. At 4.30 h the night is over. Roosters, trucks, motorbikes, dogs … and a big loud dough machine behind the house 5 m away will throw you out of the bed. Sorry to say this, because the family is really nice, but if we had know this we would have do the tour here, definitely, but not sleeping.

This is really a great place, very quiet and safe. Possible to park motorcycles at the cabin. Cabins are basic but clean. Also possibly to overnight with a camper. Food is fantastic and authentic. Fausto is a great guide and the tour is a must do. Perfect located just after the border.

Report Check-In

We wholeheartedly agree with all the positive comments made already. Fausto and his family are incredibly welcoming and it was a great pleasure to stay with them. We spent total of three nights here - we arrived on New Year’s Eve and were fine with waiting with our tour until after New Year’s Day. Really a perfect welcome to Nicaragua! They also sell Claro SIM cards in their little tienda. We went in the middle tour with Fausto (3-4h at $15/pp) which was a fun adventure. The water level was not too high and the water quite clear since it hadn’t rained in a while.

Report Check-In

After 4h in total at the Border we were tired. we doesnt fit with the big rigs at Faustos Place. we parked next to the road in front of the school (holidays). it was dusty and truck noises, night time ok. Somoto is not the best for big rigs, so these place was ok for 2 nights. Faust is nice. we did the Tour with him, 10 US$ without swimming and weil swim, 2,5h Tour, very nice. Its include the 3 US Entrance Fee.

It was absolutely amazing for a private guided excursion to Somoto Cañon. We arrived around 14h30 at the family finca, welcoming people they gave us coffee and cookies. We did a little fire with the kids after supper. There was 3 simple bathrooms and a sink to wash our dishes. The next morning we went with Fausto to the canon at 9h (he let us choose the time and tour type between 3 options). We chose the 4 hour tour - 40 min walk, 2h30 hours in the canon and 30 min walk back to the finca). He carried our stuff in water resistant bags, told us the history of the canon, spotted animals and helped us take the greatest pictures. He also had lifejackets for us. The price for the tour was 15$USD per person. The night was free. We gave him more (what felt right) because the complete experience was worth it ! They also have a small shop at the finca selling snacks and Claro SIM card if you need. We are usely people looking for privacy and avoiding guide or tour but we would do it again tomorrow ! It was great !

I always prefer to do hikes without a guide, but I’m happy I found these reviews about Fausto. He’s a super nice guy full of interesting conversation and great stories. It was just me since my girlfriend was sick, and Fausta didn’t mind doing a “private” guided tour.

I don’t think I could have met a friendlier first person after crossing the border. The canyon is beautiful, too. Loads of swimming and hiking to be done. He even said that my dog could have come. When I said he didn’t like water, he offered to bring a tube for me to sit on and to put him on my lap for the water crossing sections. So if you have dogs, consider going with Fausto!

I can’t recommend Fausto enough. We had already booked a stay with the hostel down the street, but I wish we had parked at Fausto’s. Big parking area, no height restriction, right off the main road. Would have loved to share a beer with Fausto and his wonderful family! Next time 👍🏼

Thanks for everything, Fausto!

I don’t have that much more to add to this long list of positive reviews other than to say our experience with Fausto was amazing! We can’t believe he is only charging $20 USDpp for this “adventure “tour. We gave him a bit extra as did such a great job keeping us safe while we had the experience of a lifetime.
I cannot recommend him enough.
Somoto Canyon is a MUST SEE on your travels to Nicaragua

Report Check-In

We spent a couple of days in this place, with ample parking and very safe, we took the cayon tour with the guide Fausto who is passionate about the fauna and flora, very friendly and knows the cayon very well, we took the half tour at 15$ per person including parking for the night, the parking is in Fausto's house where his family is very nice and you can pay for the food also at 70 cordobas. . spending the night and parking is free as long as you take the cayon tour.... the place is very safe and quiet... the cayon tour is a must do if you come to nicaragua.

Report Check-In

Absolutely incredible experience! Less than 10 minutes from the Nica border. We stayed 2 nights and were treated like family - we’ll be back in the area in a couple months and they even offered to let us stay with them again (no charge). We did the ‘long’ excursion down the canyon, about 5 hours and $20/pp (we felt this was too little for all their generosity so paid what felt right). Fausto was a great guide, full of interesting flora and fauna factoids along the way. Don’t miss this experience - perfect blend of adventure and connection with a lovely group of people!

This the perfect stop either just before or just after the El Espino border. Fausto and his extended family all live in a small collection of homes , its a community and you will park right in the middle of it . Its a classic Latin American set up with kids, brothers, sisters , cousins, dogs chickens etc. They are the most hospitable family . Everyone is delighted that you are staying and glad to share their way of life. I did the medium Canyon tour( about 8km moderate) with Fausto . It was incredible and Fausto was an excellent guide. you will need to do it in stout shoes or trainers as there are lots of rocks to climb over, but its well worth it. It takes about 4 to 5 hours He charged 15 USD for the tour. I felt this was under priced and paid what I thought was appropriate . if you want experience a bit of real Nicaraguan life then stop here. we loved it .

Report Check-In

Don’t miss this amazing place within a very nice family which will give you a very warm welcome! If you want to visit the Somoto Canyon we highly can recommend to do this with Fausto! He is a really nice guy, he knows the canyon very well and he will take care of you as well as you can have much fun with him. He knows much about the area, the wildlife and the plants. No problem if you only speak a little Spanish like we do. The costs for the wonderful 4 hours tour are US$ 15.00 per person and here the money goes directly to a friendly Nicaraguan family. Of course they are happy about getting a little tip, especially as they didn‘t charge us anything for 2 nights wonderful camping between chickens, dogs and cats and really charming kids! He also showed us his beautiful iguanas. Parking is easy also for big rigs. If you do not find the entrance from the main-street just ask anybody, they all know Fausto and his family. Claro signal not bad, pit toilets, cold showers and water available. Here is Fausto‘s phone nr / WhatsApp: +505 86 43 39 72. Highly recommended!

Report Check-In

The best thing that happened to us after a whole day crossing Honduras, spending 4 hours at the Nicaraguan border and not knowing where to spend the night at 6pm. In about 5min we had a warm welcome from Fausto's family, a good place to stay overnight and a tour booked for the next day in the Canyon of Somoto. Fausto was extremely nice and very helpful in making conversations with us and our limited spanish. As said in previous reviews, they lost 95% of tourists with the political situation in 2018 and the pandemic...So if you are around, go support them ! Great welcome and great tour of the Canyon !

another great review on Ramon fausto.
came here due to recomendetions on I overlander and found Ramon to be very gentle, nice and kind.
the family finca is small and not allowing a lot of privacy. our kids enjoyed playing with the family members 😊
great place, great guide.

Otra recomendación para Fausto y su hermosa familia... Nada más que agregar, super recomendados.

Report Check-In

We literally hike, swam, float, jump into the canyon and crawl on rocks for 4 hours! Super bien! Tuanis! A must stop in Nicaragua most visited canyon. Fausto Ramon is a fantastic local guide who took care of our safety at every step and knows the canyon like the back of his palm. Free stay at his family finca.

Report Check-In

We made the middle tour with Fausto. It was a great experience and we had a lot of fun. Without Fausto we nether do a tour like this. We recommended the tour very much.

Report Check-In

Fantastic place to stay, came in in the evening and asked for a Canyon tour next day - yes, no problem. Fausto is a fantastic guide, knows the surroundings and the river very well, took very good care of us during the canyon tour. Highly recommended!

Report Check-In

We did the tour with Fausto and stayed at Bayardo's farm. They were both incredibly friendly and generous. Loved to have had the opportunity to stay with all the family. The food was very good! A must try before or after crossing Honduras.

Report Check-In

as stated below, but they have a ton of birds, dogs and cats running around. they said it was ok to have our dogs off leash, but they just chased everything so we kept them on. I heard you could do the tour yourself, but we did it with fausto and never in a million years would I have been able to find that trail he took us down, through fenced properties, to the river. they provided life vests for us as half of the section on the river you are floating through a slot canyon (requires some swimming). the guide also provided a dry sack for our backpack and an extra dry sack just for our phones to go into the dry sack. very secure and he carries it. we worried about the hype of this place, but to camp for free and go on the hike was 1050. they also made a dinner for us, upon our request and in advance for 140c for 2 people. they make their own sorbet and ice cream here that was 15c in a waffle cone. definitely worth the stop after that hellish border crossing.

Report Check-In

First of all the whole family are so friendly people that it's hard to leave them.

Fausto, one of the adorablest people we met, is a really great tour guide.

He cares for all, the right speed, the safety and explains everything. last but not least you have a lot of fun with him.

We stood two nights on the families property. We donated them for staying.

Yes you can do the tour by yourself.
But support the locals and give them work is the best development assistants in the world.

Think about this.

Report Check-In

Fausto welcomed us onto the family property and we stayed for 2 days. We opted to do the canyon tour, which we recommended, and it was $30 usd total or 1100 C. If we cross this border again we will stay here. I asked and he said no charge to stay here even if you do not do the tour. They just want tourist and overlanders to return, and encourage more to come. Plenty of room for rigs of all sizes.

Report Check-In

Stayed 2 great nights with the family! It was pouring rain and dark after a 3 hour border crossing and everyone came running out to get us parked level and setup. Next day Fausto and Bayardo took us on an incredible trip to the canyon, 3 miradores, a safe rappel/rock climb down and then refreshing float back down the river. We couldn't go all the way into the canyon because of all the rain but still was totally amazed at the beauty. After relaxed back at the family compound and had a very dinner cooked by Bayardo's wife. $15/pp for the guided trip to the canyon and then a generous tip for 2 nights of camping and a dinner. Such an amazing family!! Generous, friendly, welcoming, this is why we travel!

Report Check-In

I agree with all the past posts and do add:
Fausto and his extended family will give you an experience of a close knit Nicarguan family mostly living of subsistence farming. Especially now after the 95%-99% drop in tourists since the protests 1.5 years ago.

When somebody of the family bakes bread, prepares nacatamales or harvests beans for the extended family they invite you to observe and join.

Just 7km from the border it is a perfect spot to end or start your stay in Nicaragua. Camping with big rig, tent or staying in a cabin is available.
Cabins for 2-5 people able to accomodate groups up to 12 people in cabins for 100c$ pp pn.

Fausto is a very experienced guide and does not rush you in any moment and reads if his clients prefer to listen to nature or chat. He enjoys telling you about the beginings of the tourism in the Cañon and nice anecdotes and experiences he had since then.

We do nearly always avoid taking guides and in this case are still very happy we did the long tour with him. Medium tour would have been also splendid but don't settle for the small tour which Nicaraguans normally take.

In rain season you will not be able to do any of the tours by yourself as it is essential to know where to climb, where to swim, cross the river and jump to make it out safely. More water means more adrenaline and Fausto has a great way to make the scared and nervous kind take the challenges.

In dry season you will maybe make it by yourself (as some other post say on ioverlander) but for a better Cañon experience at low water i would definetely choose to do it with Fausto again.

Ask for Chinchon a 5 year old kid off the family to play cards with.

Fausto's number on whatsapp is 0050586433972
We tried to do the canyon walk on our own having read reviews on here it's easy to do(and saving your money) , had a lovely morning walking to the miradors but couldn't get to the river despite asking several farmers, we gave up! That afternoon we drove to Fausto's, my Spanish is very basic but they confirmed it was 15 USD for the medium tour per person and we stay for free.
It was just us two, but Fausto also had an assistant who was always at the back in case of trouble.

On the walk to the river, Fausto pointed out lots of local wildlife we would have missed. The canyon experience was incredible (we've done lots of thinga like this before) we started so high up on the river, we would never have found it on our own, known how to navigate jumping into the rapids or waterfalls on our own. We definitely wouldn't have been able to do it without life jackets, as some of the rapids try to pull you down.
Support a local family and go see Fausto for this tour, he also took photos on his phone of us and sent them over on WhatsApp after.
Nothing was too much trouble, even when we had problems with no cash and had to leave after the tour to go to the Western Union office in town in order to pay him!
The parking is in their family compound, chickens, dogs, running around with a clean toilet and shower. I was able to get signal on Claro using a sim card I bought in Somato.
Access is right on the main road, easy to get to.

Camped here for 2 nights so that we could visit the canyon and then cross the border first thing the next morning. We were charged $15pp for the canyon tour and that included our camping as well. Very friendly and kind family, as has already been described. We had access to toilet, shower, electricity, and sink for washing clothes and dishes. Very simple amenities, but no complaints. We also had a great time playing with the kids in the afternoon. Very genuine experience.

Report Check-In

This community is just amazing, they welcome you as if you were from their family. We spent 2 nights there, and we went twice in the canon de somoto with Fausto.
He offers 2 tours that could be adjusted: one medium were you walk from his house to the river and then inside the canon; the long one around the canon away from the river and close to the miradors. We took the medium one, walked along the river on the rocks, swimmed and jumped into this beautiful place. We were the only ones and he offers to get out before the end of the canon to reach the miradors after a little climbed.
We went back the next day with climbing rope and gear to set up a rappel on one cliff : he was probably one of the happiest man on earth. Others guides joined us and tried the rappel and we finally climbed the rock. So much fun.
His family is super welcoming, are very curious about your van, talk a lot and offer you to try plenty of things.
Don't forget to ask for cheese and honey, both are super good.
We had an amazing stay : this place is fantastic.

We had a terrific time at Fausto's family property, which is 5 houses for all the family members and a small shop. The whole Ramon family are so warm and friendly and our two nights with them became a highlight of our time in Nicaragua. We were able to park on their property and we had access to electricity with our extension cord, toilets, and showers. Thet helped us to practice some more Spanish and welcomed us like family. There are some young kids who are kind, curious, and so much fun to play baseball (the national sport) and 'lando' (like tiggy or chasy) with, but are happy to leave you alone too if you prefer. One of the brothers in law, Jackson, speaks English but they're all very used to and accommodating of overlanders, having hosted people like us for about 3 years. Fausto is a guide and took us on a 4 hour tour of the somoto canyon which included equipment, and we got to enjoy both the beautiful nature and fun swimming and cliff jumping with him and their dog Rocky. He even went above and beyond when I lost my GoPro down a 10 metres deep part of the river, and was able to get a friend of his to freedive down to get it for us! For both the two nights stay and the 4 hour tour, we paid $15 USD pp, essentially you get to stay for free for doing the tour. It was great to be able to do the tour with a local community member rather than through a tour company and so wonderful to get to meet and interact with the locals. We would definitely recommend anyone coming to somoto canyon to stay here.

Awesome place, great, friendly family.
They love to talk to you and learn about your life and will tell you about theirs. but also will leave you alone when you just want some peace and quiet.
The tour is really good, you'll need some flexible trainers with good grip ideally. It's not super exhausting, but there is some climbing and crawling. You will get completely wet. It's a beautiful and fun tour, Fausto is a great guide, he will tell you about the area and is very patient, no rush with him, unless that's what you want.
We had amazing freshly picked beans and tortillas, homemade Cheese and Gallo Pinto. This family are great Hosts!!! Go Here, you won't be disappointed.

Report Check-In

As described, Fausto and his family are great!!! Tour was well worth it, and the Gallo Pinto prepared by his family was a great meal after a day in the canyon. Just ask, they prepared a meal for us at c60 per person.

Fausto does have WhatsApp, and will respond quickly. Use the free internet in the building at the Nicaraguan boarder crossing.

Fausto wanted us to emphasize that he has a safe place for travelers at any time of the night. Just roll in, park on the left, sleep well, and you will be greeted in the morning with a warm smile.

The canyon tour was excellent! Clean and cold water is so refreshing on a sunny day. Highlight of Nica for us!

What an incredible stay in Ramon's familly. We camp in Ramon's cousin garden for 2 nights and we could have stayed 10. The tour in the canyon was super great, canyoning, jumping, swimming in a gorgeous landscape but it was nothing compare how welcome us in his familly. They always wanted to feel home, they gave us eggs, lemon grass for some tea, natural ice creams, and overall lot's of time with us to practice our spannish.
Ramon is so proud to show us some pictures on his phone all the people from all over the world who came in his place, and especially he is proud of all the rvs which camp here for the nights.
So don't hesitate, it's a must stay in Nicaragua !!

Not much to add from previous comments, super friendly people, nothing fancy but dead honest and you can tell they like having people around :) had diner for 60 cordobas pp, was a classic but good local dish and plenty.

We did the medium tour, at the end we were getting a bit cold in the water so perfect amount of time as far as we're concerned! Beautiful canyon, our highlight in Nicaragua.

As said - really great! It's more a family homestay than a camping/tour operator. They are so welcoming, love chatting and inviting their guests to their tortillas. Canyoning is still 15 usd and worth every cent!

Wow, what a nice family! Had a great Canyon tour with Claudia, a meal cooked by Fausto's wife, chatted with the other siblings (in bad Spanish), and in the morning after a torrential downpour the whole family helped us get out of the mud. At one point Fausto even insisted on washing my feet! Welcome to Nicaragua :)

The tour was great - jumping, swimming, floating... Our 7 month old puppy even managed it but by the time you get back to camp you'll be pretty tired.

We did the long tour, which involved hiking 2km to the far end and then traversing the whole canyon. There is also a short and medium tours, but we saw people entering at the bottom and turning around half way.

Nice place to stay. The family is very friendly and they are all happy to have visit. We stayed the night before and the one after the canyon. They didn't charge anything to stay.
Even if you arrive late at night, they will let you in.
Don't do the canyon too early in the morning as the sun don't show up until 11 am in the bottom of it and the water is cold (yes you can be cold in Nicaragua ;-)

Very simple place to camp at if you book the tour. Families living there are friendly. Allowed us to wash our dishes despite having problems with water connection (water comes every 3 days). I speak super basic spanish and Fausto managed to explain me everything in a simple manner.

Camped for free because we booked the 4hours tour for the next day ($15 p.p.) Amazing tour and quiet night. We first stopped at Somoto tours a little further on the road, they offer the same tour for $25 and said Fausto is not living here. For us it seemed not fair to do business like this so we went for the tour&stay with Fausto and his family. Very friendly and professional! Would do it again!

Parked for free next to Fausto's family, had a perfectly quiet night. Toilet available 24h, meals and small cabin available. Did a private 4h tour with Fausto which was great. He provides life jackets and carries a waterproof bag for your camera, snacks or glasses (bright a case for your glasses). He knows pretty much every rock in that canyon and was an excellent guide. Paid 15 USD, if you stay in his cabin and have lunch, too, it'll be 20. Fausto is one of a cooperative of guides who has done it hundreds of times without any accident or even a camera getting wet (according to him). Highly recommended.
