Description

Large flat gravel parking lot (about 30 standard parking spots) for a variety of trails associated with the Kernsville Dam Recreation Area and Desilting Basin. Less than 1 mile from Hamburg PA stores and restaurants. Quiet, dark, and safe. There are no signs against overnight parking or camping. Probably best for a van or smaller rig that can fit in one standard parking place but nothing to prevent larger rigs or TT's. Direct access to a few walking, biking and MTB trails. NO ATVs/motorized vehicles on trails. This is a gem tucked away from the hub-bub of Cabelas, Walmart, & Cracker Barrel parking lots nearby. The trails are open dawn to dusk, but nothing is posted about parking overnight. We scoped it out and had a nice walk before skipping the fast food chains near Cabelas and heading downtown for dinner at local brewpub. We were parked up and tucked in by 9pm and didn't even hear the two cars that had pulled in by the time we woke up at 7 am. There are some garbage cans near trail info kiosk. No bathrooms or water that we saw. There are areas upriver closer to the Kernsville Dam and boat ramp that are currently closed by the PA Department of Environmental Protection, but the trails are open and accessible from this large parking lot at the Desilting Basin.

Big signs with red lettering recently installed state "DAY USE ONLY. No trespassing 10 pm to 6 am." Also says "No Camping." Doesn't specify no overnight parking" but the intent is clear. Luckily, there are about 6 other places to park free overnight in Hamburg.
