Description

Here you can let your van (big rigs might rather stop at Tinki and take a taxi or start from there) to start the most spectacular trek you have ever done, around the Nevado Ausangate! One to five days trek possible. It is not possible to be provided in food or drink, so you have to carry everything with you, unless you ask a guide of this small community for horses. Three little shops will provide you in bread or in last things you would need. You can ask for electricity there. Have little change with you or you won't be able to buy anything. We reached the first pass with horses and then did the whole round in 2 nights and 3 days walking. We paid 200 soles for 2 people. You don't need a guide if you think you can carry all your stuff (3 passes at around 5000m to walk up) (nights are really cold, you need real warm equipement !), you can find a map in Cusco or on Google. Don't take tours from Cusco, everything can be organised from here! Once the walk is over, you can just relax in the hot springs (5 soles) in front of this impressive mountain. What is sure is that you can't leave Peru without visiting this authentic and amazing landscape, far from overcrowed walks!

Unfortunately it is like written in the previous post: Jose Luis and people there are really adicted to the money (not to the tourists). We didn't even enter his house/shop and where asked to buy artesanias.
First Jose Luis asked as to pay 10Sol per night - told him usually its 5, agreed with eyes rolling (usually there is nothing to pay cause you buy the "Ticket de uso de campamento" when you pay for the road.
And the best thing: after our treking our car was scrached buy small kids. So for paying for "secure" parking you get at scrached car...cool☹! Jose Luis not even said sorry, only mentioned "small kids" and not his problem.

But the landscape here (went up to the pass behind the lagunas) is really, really nice!!! Maybe you can do it in a day and avoid sleeping in Pacchanta- start very early with the trek, after use the termas in Pacchanta for 1 hour, than leave for sleeping to another place...

we paid 40Sols in total for Street (10 pP)and entrance (10pP). streets ok with good weather, just in Pachanta streets are bad. We went to Jose Luis but we do not recommend and in our opinion its not worth coming up here. We organized a tour with Jose Luis and the next morning (half an hour before we planned to leave with his guide and hourse for a 3day trek) he knocked on our van and told us its not possible to go...he cancelled on us because he got a bigger group coming from Cusco and he tried to tell us some excuses which didnt make sense. the whole village seemed not honest and a bit strange.

The Jose Luís family is super friendly and welcoming! They took care of our car while we did the Ausangate circuit. They also offer a lot of other stuff like guided tours, horses, etc. Maria sells Alpaka products (we got some really nice sweaters). Their number for WhatsApp: 973 122324 (Peru).

Just one advise: at the beginning of the road to Pacchanta is an illegal tool booth. They want 10 soles per person just because the road passes through their village. Just pass straight and pay the official entrance (10 soles pp) to the Ausangate park a few km up. I marked both spots (illegal toll booth and official park entrance).

As described. Amazing loop backpack. Nice hot springs. Lots of commercial trips, felt really safe during hike as well as parking the car. Nights were below freezing.

We left the car here during several days, Jose Luis who is super friendly took care of it.
We went on the Ausangate trek by ourselves (no horse no guide) without any problem. Of course you have to carry food and warm clothes but you can find drinkable water in each campsite. We made a loop (start and finish at Pacchanta) in 3 days walking plus 2.5 hours to go to Upis first. There is also hot springs in Upis but a bit dirty.

We drove to this place, but I must say that the streets are not goot, you need high clearance, with our Dodge Ram 1500 was the limit. Know your car well and know the way well. Yes, the locals drive there but they don't really care if something happens to their cars. Still a fantastic hike, but maybe better to park in Tinke. Where? we don't know. We drove here with our car, without any arrangements. In Pacchanta are plenty of hostals (I believe 15 sol per person) but we preferred to sleep in our car and paid 5 Sol per person to use the bathroom of hostal José Luis. There are at least 2 shops in this tiny town, but do not count on vegetables and fruit. Make sure you stock up in Tinki. Ah and there is even a tiny restaurant! The road to Pacchanta is a good dirt road; there is only one tricky part which is pretty bumpy and rocky but the local taxis drive this road as well so I guess any car will manage. There is a nice hike to the 7 lagunas, which can also be done by horse (the horse owners will approach you soon enough to offer ;)). We paid 35 sol per horse and 35 for the guide, for a 4 hour trek. Great thing about this town is that you can enjoy the hot hot springs at the end of the day for 5 sol.

We did a one day treck. 3 horses for our children+one guide+one arriero for a total of 220 soles. Fantastic treck (6h) in ausangate. You can park your car at tinqui And take a taxi to pacchanta since the Road is very rough (we did it with our Fiat ducato RV Adria but we do not recommend it).
