Guarded parking at the Martyrs Monument in Chabaish. From here you can also book tours into the marshes. Ask for Achmed, tourist security, to get permission to stay. Achmed speaks English and escorts tourists in this area. He is not a tourist guide! You can use WIFI from the guards.

Spent a quiet night here, guards were very nice and didn't hesitate a single moment to let us stay. However, around 7 PM one of the military guys came to us with a phone with someone speaking English on the other side. He told us that the manager of the monument didn't want us to sleep here. We were told to sleep just outside the gate. In the end they convinced him to let us sleep inside the gate. Quite a few mosquitos as you might expect in a swamp.
Also went on a 1 hour marsh tour with on of the boats for 20.000. They started at 40.000 and were very firm at 25.000 but in the end we agreed on 20.000.
Report Check-Inwe contacted Ali in advance and he came to pick us up at the monument and took us to his house right away because we arrived in the evening. he let us choose if we want to sleep in the traditional open marsh house or in our car (both options for free, there is good wifi as well), we even got extra dinner we didnt ask for and were not expected to pay for ( just simple food - bread, some tomatoes and fried potatoes and tea). first price for the tour he asked for 15 000 per person for 1 hour but when we told him other people got it for half price and that it seems too expensive for us he agreed to 15 000 total for the 2 of us. we tried to find out how much would dinner cost but he kept throwing other things into the price and it was complicated to discuss through a translator so we just decided to get the tour only. we ended up getting the basic dinner anyway so next day we gave him 25 000 instead of 15 000. He is really a fair and kind man, you just need to have patience with the translator. we also refilled 20 l of drinking water from him
Report Check-InTip for visiting the marshes. We visited the marshes today with Ali. Paid 15 000 IQD for one hour (I didn't bargain), while other people at the martyrs' monument asked triple the price. He can also do overnight stays and tours with lunch. He speaks little English (don't expect too much expenation), and doesn't mind dogs on board 😁 We really enjoyed the marshes as a getaway from the chaos in federal Iraq. Ali asked me to share his number with anyone who might come here and agreed to let me share it here, so here you go: +964 782 523 3742
Report Check-InThey asked for 50.000 dinar for 2 hours. When we said others paid 30.000 dinar, that was immediately ok. In the end we added another 5.000 dinar as we also made a stop with local tourists that invited us for lunch, so the boy/captain took us longer than 2h.
We didn't overnight here but the guards offered it
Okey for one night, not much privacy - but guards are friendly, but they don’t bother to stare.
Boats tour was really nice, we did it in the late afternoon when the sun wasn’t so scorching anymore and the light fell softly over the water.
Be aware to clearly communicate a price in the beginning when Achmed asks you, we had a misunderstanding and we said “yes” to paying 40,000 Dinar for the tour… the guide was really friendly, but spoke no English.
Report Check-InReally nice place to stay, most peaceful night camping we had in all of southern Iraq. We paid 35,000 dinar for a 1.5 hour tour in the marsh, two people. The guards offered us a room to stay in, but we opted for our tent instead. There’s drinking water and washrooms in the guard building. Busy with visitors in the day but quiet at night.
Report Check-InVery friendly guards that don't speak English. They gave me food and let me sleep inside one of the rooms rather than camping (helpful as it was super windy). Safe to park motorcycle inside the gate. Easy to arrange boat tours, it was 30k for two hours without negotiation. They automatically call Ahmed to come once they see foreigners.
Report Check-InLarge secure car park to spend several nights / days. There are toilets available, water, rooms with air conditioning. Possibility to sleep inside the building. Very nice soldiers.
Report Check-InVery friendly soldiers, they will call Achmed to sort it out. The Marches are very dry in the moment. Good place to stay for a night or two.
Report Check-InWie beschrieben. Wir hatten zwei ruhige Nächte. Toiletten sind inakzeptabel
