Latest Check-Ins

Arrived only at 15:30, but were still able to get a transit visa for 40$. It took an hour to be ready and we left at 16:30 with all the local Burundians as the consulate closes at that time. This might be the latest possible time to arrive and still get a visa.

Report Check-In

Arrived at 11:45am to apply for two 4 day transit visas. We’re German and South African nationals. Lots of people around but we were fast-tracked and seen immediately.

The visa was USD40 each, has to be paid in USD. The process was very swift, we were in and out in 45min.

Report Check-In

We came around 10am on a Monday. Quite busy with Burundians waiting in the carpark outside but we were fast-tracked / in a different queue and were seen to straight away.

We only needed our passport and the US$90 - no photos needed. Process was very quick and informal - the consulate worker was friendly, he was happy we’d chosen to visit Burundi!

If you need to get US$ to pay the fee you can exchange TZ Shillings for them at CRDB Bank on the main road a few blocks away.

Side note: when visiting Burundi - be aware that the ‘official’ currency exchange rate is a very bad deal. Once in Burundi you can buy Burundi Francs with US$ for a much more favourable rate on the black-market, so it’s worth going with US$ in your pocket!

Easy process for Burundian visa. Went in around 11.30am. They explained we could get the 30 day visa for $90, or a 4 day transit visa for $40 (which can be extended in Bujumbura). We chose the transit visa and it was ready in 30 minutes. We didn't need anything except our passports and USDs, plus they even had change.

Report Check-In

Arrived at 09:00am (sa tatu) as per the security guards instruction the day before :-) We were the only ones there visa $90 for 30days (SA&USA citizens), it took a while to get visas because we had to wait for the boss to arrive- we asked about the procedure of leaving Burundi to enter Rwanda and he was the one who needed to let tell us.***

Got our visas after 1.5hrs. Very friendly staff.

***The boss did NOT know what was needed. We had a friend in Burundi who helped us, basically you need to write a letter to the Minister of Police requesting to leave Burundi. You submit this letter along with a copy of your passport/s and copy of vehicle registration at the ministry office. Submit in advance (2-3days before you plan to leave).

Our letter was written in French by our friend. It was a basic request to leave, stating why we had travelled to Burundi, which border we intended to cross into Rwanda (Nemba), the date we would leave, our full names, passport numbers and vehicle registration. Hope that helps!
