A nice little spot at the end of the road. We pulled off the road into the Rocky Beach area for the first three nights. The wind got pretty bad on the third night so we ended up moving further up where there was more tree coverage to break up the wind. I do not recommend parking on this if it’s raining heavily or has rained recently. Toilets available, 20 minute walk away We’ve got a sprinter 170 and we did just fine, I’d be cautious for anything super big though as you may not be able to turn around down here Border patrol checked on us multiple times and never told us to leave or bothered us . Border patrol planes fly over here through the day when it’s not cloudy Update: stayed for a week and a half in the area, all but 2 nights here. I loved this place, got to meet some lovely nomads as well. Check out “The Gym” in Del Rio if you need a good workout, they’re the only proper bodybuilding gym we’ve found since leaving our hometown.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
There are 3 sort of places to stay near the end of paved spur Rd 406 and 3 pins on the map, but there seems to be some confusion about what is or isn't free.
1. The northernmost location is the obvious NRA pay campground with picnic structures, grills and pit toilets. Appear to be 5 sites with pay station. $6/night
2. The middle location is down the dirt road on the left after the last site and privy. There are carsonite posts designating the area for camping. According to the sign at the pay station, this is the primitive camp area and is still $6/night. There are about 3 or 4 unmarked spots.
3. The southernmost area is a small pulloff near the literal end of the road by the lake. According to the sign at the pay station, camping is only allowed in designated areas within Amistad NRA.
From other comments, there seems to be minimal/sporadic enforcement. You be the judge.
Report Check-InWe sleeped here one night without problems, but one the second day, park ranger toll use to move in the park area.
Report Check-InDead end road. The road goes in the water. You can park on it. Only small rig can do the u-turn. Very quiet, 30 feet’s from the lake, can do kayak or paddle board.
