Description

We drove on Sunday March 20th, 2022 from Comitán to Lagos de Colón. A pick-up truck blocked the road and 3 men without uniform but with machine guns came and asked where we wanted to go. We asked if there is a problem and they told us that they just care about our security. One of the men wanted to open our door, but it was closed and he got angry. But the other men calmed him down and told us that they are not criminals. After about 10 minutes they let us continue. When we asked the people in Lagos de Colón they told us that since about 6 month there are fights between Narcos which came from Michoacan and those who come from Guatemala. They told us that they are not always there, but often and that the best time to travel would be between 8 a.m. and noon time.

Drove from La Mesilla to Comitan today. There was the "usual" Checkpoint operated by local community.
They were happy to check copies of our passports, took a look at the back of our van, gave us a nice smile and thumbs up. We were through in less than two minutes.

Drove this road today, no road blocks. We asked the customs and a bus driver at La Messilla, they said there were no road blocks for a few weeks.
If you’re in La messilla or Comitán, the best is ask to these bus drivers, they do the road every day several times.

The pavement of this road is nice.

We passed through the checkpoints with our campervan today. Direction: Mexico to Guatemala.
1. Checkpoint is Mexican Police. They take fotos of vehicles and passports (official documents, no copies). All seems official.
2. Checkpoint is before the bridge, by local people. A little bit chaotic. They want to see passports. Here we gave copies only. They wanted to inspect the campervan, but I opened only the backdoors. They let us pass without further trouble.
3. Checkpoint by locals is on the other side of the bridge. They seem to check traffic coming from Guatemala. So, no stop for us.

The checkpoints by locals were calm today, but it could probably change at any time. So, best would be to check ahead, e.g. with local police.

Locals are blockading traffic going to Guatemala. Mostly friendly, many women, I just said that I’m a tourist traveling to Guatemala. They also asked me if I was recording, which I was not. It’s a good idea to put away your GoPro if you are approaching the border from Comitán.
