Something not right?

Description

We stayed here two nights after a recommendation from friends. The site is in the bwindi reserve and you do not have to pay to enter here. $12 pp for camping here, nice grassy areas and bikes have to stay in parking lot. Place has a restaurant, but we haven't eaten here as it is $10 per meal. More expensive than the US. If you are lucky you may see gorillas in the campsite, as our friends did. There is fast wifi- when the staff are not using it- which is most of the day. Staff are friendly but pushy on the gorilla tracking. We have decided not to do it due to the exceptional costs, and none of it goes back to conservation or the community. Stunning forest scenery, but a massive tourist spot.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Buhoma Community camp/lodge. We stayed in one of the Bandas, Porcupine. It is a quiet, clean, and nice place to stay while you enjoy the gorillas, town, and get to the culture better. Alex is the manager. He was super helpful. Alex assisted in making sure our paperwork, guides, and excursions were all set up. He was very attentive to our needs and always made sure everything was set! All of the staff are amazing. Very kind and helpful 🙂. The food is excellent. The rooms are nice and clean, and the showers are hot. Alex even helped us get set up with a guide for bird watching! This is definitely the place to stay.

Just inside the park gate, no fees to enter, just have to register. We chose the mongoose cabin for a comfortable rest prior to our gorilla trekking, although there are a couple of sites available for small tents. we Paid $160usd pppn full board. Food is very tasty and service good. Good supply of hot water, but electric power is inconsistent.

Report Check-In

Gate height at least 3.7 meters, we passed with a truck 3.6 meters high.
No Wifi when we were there, good MTN signal. 10$ pppn

2nights enjoyable stay. Camped in the parking lot so to speak, but it was quiet and enjoyable. Staff are lovely. Arranged a community walk (now 30usd pp), and the community guide also took us on the self-guided trail for 50k ugx. No park fees needed for this.
You could possibly just go to the main building for gorilla trekking and ask if you can walk the trail, they may insist on an armed ranger (10k for 1-2hrs should cover this).

View from the restaurant is nice. We were allowed to eat our meals in the restaurant (self cooked) because it was quiet.

Staff did our laundry for us (ask for the price list), it's reasonably fair pricing for a formal place. Although could probably get someone in the village to do it for less than half the price.

We loved Buhoma, and would recommend the accommodation and definitely the town in general (even if you aren't gorilla trekking, which we didn't due to cost).

Great spot for camping. Originally they quoted us $12pppn for camping but we explained that others had paid $10 which they were fine with. They also offered to let us shower in one of the cottages so we could have hot water. Parking for RTT is in the small grassy lot inside of the gate. Plenty of space for ground tents as well.

We asked about a packed lunch, but they wanted $10 for a peanut butter or tomato/cheese sandwich. (!!!!) Small shops just outside of the gate are within walking distance so we opted to buy stuff to pack our own lunch (tomatoes, avocado, banana, etc) for a fraction of the price. Also, we did not do the Gorilla trekking here (more interested in seeing the Albertine Rift endemic birds) and despite staying here in June, did not see them in the campsite as others mentioned was possible. (I did ask and apparently they do come but it's rare.)
Either way, would recommend.

The staff is very helpful and friendly. They arrange permits for the Gorilla Trekking 1 day before. Food was very tasty. We liked this place.

We asked for reduced price and got 10usd pp. The wifi situation is still the same. They use it in their office and tell you they will bring it back later. Nice hot shower water. Not too bad to stay in parking area but privacy is a problem.

We camped on the lawn by the car park. Lovely hot water in the shower. We didn’t eat in the restaurant but were told the food was nice. We stayed three nights and saw the gorillas on the second day. As Kenyans the price is affordable, but still cheaper here for tourists than Rwanda. If you stay here in June there is a chance of seeing gorillas in the camp as a favorite tree comes into fruit.

We were two days here. The campground was under maintenance. Clean ablutions hot shower with a donkey. good restaurant
But the best is the friendly staff always considered and helpful.
I love the concept: your money goes to free healthcare and petrol for the community.

20% of the income goes into the development of surrounding communities. this is to avoid pouching and prevent collection of firewood.

We stayed for 3 nights for $10 pppn.We stayed with our rooftop tent at the parking lot, but this is not bad! Your also support the community by staying here, this place exists before the gate was even there.
That's why they have the best view from the restaurant.
The wifi is on and off, also because the staff is using the most of it haha. The manager helped us getting the tickets for the gorilla's, he can make you a good price!
I recommend the diner and packed lunch for the gorilla tracking! Good food and really enough. $10 pp

Friendly staff, laundry available, hot shower, camping 12$. I spend there 4 nights and final price was 40$.

Report Check-In

Open to negotiation. We managed to get the room cost down to $30pppn from $60. Good food, beautiful view, clean facilities.

Very nice spot, just inside the gate of the park, with an open restaurant looking out onto the forested hillside. Tent camping spots are private, shady, and flat, and ablutions are clean. Meals $10 each, dinner was worth it (tastiest food I've had since Ethiopia), breakfast is pretty standard, and I didn't opt for the packed lunch (you can get local food just down the road). Camping $12, proceeds apparently go towards various development projects in the community.

Report Check-In

If you travel with a separate tent or fancy a cabin than this is a great place! The camping spots are separated by a lot of plants so you really feel secluded. But if you are dependent of the car, than this is only acceptable for 1 or maybe 2 nights because you have to stay in the parking lot right next to the busy road. Definitely negotiate the price down because 12 dollars is way to much for this! I got it down to 10 dollars very easy. Ablutions are OK but there are no lights in the toilets and showers. There is hot water all day. All meals are 10 dollars each. Dinner is 3 course and was very good.
I must have come at a bad time for wifi because it was down very frequent and even when it worked it was very slow.

Stayed here as a site for our Gorrilla trek. Parked our truck in the car park . No real camping amenities . Toilet & shower basic but hot water. Eat in restaurant , food was ok .3 courses. As we were here for a few days we did the village tour , which was very good & interesting & much better than expected . Staff friendly . Very convenient for trekking start point.

Very nice campsite just inside the Bwindi NP but without paying the entrance fee. after some negotiating we paid 15 dollar for 2 persons per night and we had some very good local food for 7,5 dollar each! big cars and rooftoptents have to stay at the parking, but the showers are very hot and the wifi is good! Staff is really friendly and helpfull with giving us a good tip about somebody canceling the gorilla tracking so we got a permit for less then the normal ammount! thanks very much!
