Description

It's an amazing drive to this place!
A lot of wildlife and untouched jungle. The road into Manu NP continues a little bit further, but I found my spot in Shintuya. You can visit the hotsprings on the other side of the river (50 Sol for the boat and 10 Sol entry). Wili Corisepa Dreve and his Mexican Wife Isabel can provide you a room and show you a little bit the local culture. They rescive Workaways too, so you can help them at their farming and building projects.

However it's a tough road until you get here. There are some serious Rivercrossings and extremely muddy parts. Better come with a good 4x4 with enough clearance. From Cusco it's about a 10 h drive.

We thought about staying at Willis, but it turned out to be almost a voluntary BUSINESS. We did not like the atmosphere at all. 6 volunteers being at his house, paying for volunteering but nothing to do, Willi outa town and everybody was waiting for his return and hoping to go with him towards the national park.
We met German and his lovely family at the end of the little village towards the “port”.
They let us stay at their house and we paid them including 3meals. They were very nice, have 4 children and even a little monkey.
They are indigenous and grew up there and know every little spot in the surrounding rainforest. We even tracked a Tapir!!!
But the best, Herman and his brothers are very interested in guiding tourist through the jungle!!! They have a boat ( so they can bring you to aquas calientes and go fishing), they cleaned paths through the jungle, built a mirador.
The next days they took us on a 2 day jungle tour, one night sleeping in a camp they ate just building! Awesome experience!!! A lot realer than tours booked from Cusco for very little money!!!!
You can also park your car there and use the bathroom!!!
Ask for Herman, Che and Willibert.
If you are worried about passing the 5 rivers between salvacion and shintuya, there is a bus leaving Salvacion at 5am daily and returning at around 7.30am.

Nice place, nice people. We paid 50sol p/p including three meals. Parking on the street next to the house. The road here is long, rough and full of curves but not so bad. At this time of the year all the streams were easy to cross. Only after heavy rain they might be a bit problematic. High clearance and good tyres are essential but 4x4 is not neccesery. Definitely not for big rigs.

We parked in front of the house of Willi and Isabell. They are lovely and we had a great time here. Definately recommend this place if you are looking for the Manu experience away from the tour operators of Cusco.
This is the real thing!
Willi works as a guide as well. He charges 150 S pp per day to show you the dschungel, take you hunting, fishing, go to Papageis, etc. Keep in might that this money goes directly into his reforestation project oteri. So its well invested and does not feed any hungry tour operator in Cusco. We spend 10 days in Shintuya, learned a lot about the local indeginous, experienced the dschungel with its goodies and its problems.
The road to Shintuya is not to bad. Just the river crossings are a bit scary, but anyhow we made it with our 2wd Ford Transit. If you get stuck, lovely locals will most likely pull you out of the river, so they did for us:)
