Description

Around here there is a police station on the side of the road and around ten policemen stopping cars.

We were stopped by the first of them and in very unfriendly manners asked for every document he could ask for and then finally let us go. For his manners and stuff he asked (he found strange we had bought our insurance in Puno), we believe he was fishing for something. Everything was ok so he finally let us go.

We drove 50m and the last policeman of the group stopped us again.
He said he was going to fine me for reckless driving, because I was leaning forward instead of sitting straight up (I was raising the car window.

Then he said our lights were too dirty and that we needed a special permit to have tinted glasses.

We told him we are driving around America and check with consulates and ministries before entering each country, to be sure of our rights and obligations (not true), so that we knew our lights and tinted glasses were legal and that I was not obliged to get out of the car or give him my passport as he was asking.

He wanted me to get out, away from the dash camera he saw we had, which I did not do. I also told him we had inside security cameras, so my movements while driving were on record.

We believe he noticed we would not pay a dime, and he was wasting his time with us instead of trying luck with other cars. So he finally let us go.

Just be calm, don't be in a hurry, don't get out of the car, don't give your original documents and definitely DON'T PAY.
They'll eventually get tired and let you go.

Latest Check-Ins

We passed a police checkpoint, where everything was good. Shortly after a police car with one single officer followed us and waved us to the side. He went on to tell us that we are obligated to stop at every police control. He tried to intimidate us a little bit and lightly suggesting us to bribe him. After explaining to him that we passed many controls like this before and that the officers at the checkpoint very obviously waved us through he still tried to insist on our „mistake“. After that we pointed out that we have a dash camera (not true) and are willing to drive back to his colleagues to clearify the „mistake“. This bugged him and he let us go.

Report Check-In

Police control a little north of this point just after the Petro Peru gas station. We stopped at the gas station and were not pulled over when we left.
No more police at this point today.

Report Check-In

Nobody here today in either direction or any sign of a checkpoint.
Edit: Checkpoint was couple kilometers north.

Report Check-In

Pulled us over and started looking through documents. We asked him how far until Lima while he was looking through it and made a joke about the traffic and he handed everything back and let us go. Make sure your lights are on!

Report Check-In

Nobody here today. Didn’t see police or a police station on our way south
