Description

Starting after Maralal. About 15 km per hour…
from Maralal to Baragoi via the C77 (towns Poro and Suyani) This road is horrible for about 70 KM’s, we also felt a little unsafe (police was debating if we needed an escort). Also a lot of angry farmers with AK’s and screaming children who throw rocks when you don’t give them sweets. Take the road from Maralal to Barsaloi! You will need a 4x4 (near Maralal it’s very steep) and you can only do this in dry season due to a few river crossings. But the road is smooth (sand, gravel and tar) with beautiful scenery. People are friendly but also scarce. I would recommend this route. Starting (or the other way) from Maralal to Barsaloi and then to Baragoi. Might even be a bit faster! Don’t forget to ask what the current bandit situation is though! This area is still a bit hectic.

Latest Check-Ins

Starting in Maralal, very rocky and crap road for about 60 km, very montanious track, and then it gets a bit better. Still some rough and slow sections until South Horr.
Don't know how that person below managed to average 50 kph... If you have a bit of respect for your car, that's not gonna happen. From Maralal, it took us about 5h to get to South Horr and 2 more hours to get to Loiyangalani (230 km in total). Road after South Horr is in way better shape. Watch out in South Horr, many kids throwed rocks at us (but the adults are friendly, just the kids being little shits, asking for sweets and getting pissed if they don't get any...).
30 km before Loiyangalani, the view over the lake is spectacular. Amazing drive from another planet.

Nobody talked to us about safety issues in the area, checkpoints were relaxed, very welcoming and friendly. Still we didn't feel very comfortable wildcamping, even if there is beautiful spots along the road.

Report Check-In

Every police check point said the area is safe. We saw a group of men with M-16s and AKs, however they were soldiers with local blankets for warmth. It wasn't clear they were soldiers at first, protecting an aviation comms radar.

The road is mostly flat or cement with some rocky and steep hills where the cement roads couldn't keep up with erosion. We averaged 50kph the entire length to south horr.

We are in a 2015 FJ Cruiser towing an overlanding trailer.

Report Check-In

Everybody assured us, that this route is safe now. There was rain earlier this year, and everything is green. There might also some improvement have been done to the road. There is a section which is rough, but in total it is OK. We are a big camper (5.5t, 3.6m high) and had an average speed of about 23kmh.
