Description

Open year around (unlike the other campground here which is seasonally closed for colder months). This FREE RV and tent campground with paved roads is close to the visitor center, 31 small sites with picnic tables, charcoal grills, and parking spaces. There are restrooms and running water available at the comfort station but no hookups or dump stations; RVs are limited to 28 feet or less. The campgrounds are available on a first-come-first-served basis. In the winter, campers should be prepared for cold temperatures and snow. The terrain is sandstone and surrounded by a pinyon pine and juniper forest. Open campfires are not allowed throughout the whole park.
The whole park is a NO DRONE ZONE.

An absolutely awesome free campground with individual campsites, picnic tables, Grills, paved parking and paved roads, paved trails, a wonderful visitors center and even cliff dwellings.
One of the finest free campgrounds I've been to across 34 states. Easy to access and well maintained. highly recommended

Report Check-In

Free campground after the visitor center. Lots of snow on the ground but there are spots without snow. Water spigot is turned off for winter months. Restrooms were warm and clean. There is a sink to dump gray water at the campground and fountain to fill water bottles at the visitor center. About 30 spots in total. Saw an RV park in the visitor center parking lot, so that might be an option as well. No one else stayed the night with us. The second night we had to dip out because the projected precipitation combined with the temperatures at 7,500 feet of elevation made us worried about driving out with 2WD in slick conditions.

Report Check-In

Pulled in for sunset, super quiet this time of year. Only one other vehicle in the campground all night

nice gem

Report Check-In

Arrive middle of the day, only one spot was taken. By the time I went to sleep most spots had been filled. It’s a free, first come first serve location. Spots are on the smaller size but perfect for us. Beautiful sunset and stars were amazing.
The whole park is a NO DRONE ZONE.

Report Check-In

Nice CG. I wish the no generator quiet time was longer. quite a few spots to choose from at 4pm, but mostly full by eve.

Report Check-In

Amazing free camping site.
The sun set on one side and the full moon rises on the other.

Report Check-In

Nothing to add… Just want to make sure that IOverlander stays updated. Beautiful Campground & FREE!

Report Check-In

Beautiful sunset view from the rocks at site #7.

Report Check-In

Nothing to add ! Good vibes! Not full today at 7pm

Report Check-In

Arrived at 6pm a Wednesday, half of the spots were still free and was unused this night. Really quiet and clean campground, for free this is insane!

Report Check-In

Nice campsite, gets crowded quickly in the evening. You should arrive in the afternoon to get a place. Very quiet

Report Check-In

Arrived at 12:00 pm on a Friday, and only about 10 spots taken. Plenty of options, slightly more limited if you have a 2nd vehicle. Bathrooms are clean with running water. No fires and cool weather (55°) make me think it'll be pretty quiet tonight.

Report Check-In

it seems like it’s harder and harder to find free camping within the Monument Valley area, and although this is 50 miles south, it’s a wonderful campground to stop at! 10 miles off of the main road, within the Navajo National Monument! there’s 31 sites, first come first serve, FREE! each with a picnic table, grill and flushing toilets (sinks + soap, too)! beautiful views and in walking distance from the visitor center! we arrived a little before 7pm on a Wednesday in late April and easily found a spot (only 10 or so sites were taken by that time)! we stayed two nights. about 2 bars of AT&T and Verizon service.

Report Check-In

Great campsite! Quiet sites with heaps of space. Definitely recommend doing the hikes and check out the national monument. We're glad we came to camp here otherwise we would have missed this incredible site!

Report Check-In

Free camping on Navajo lands. First come First serve. 15 miles off main Hwy
30 sites with #15 being the best and most level. Great trails and history here too

Report Check-In

Nice campground, very clean and friend;y staff. This must be THE place to be though, we had a never ending parade of people driving around the campground and we were stunned by how busy this place is at this time of year. Below freezing, but sunny. Lots of snow still on the ground as well.

Report Check-In

Winter here. Park team does an excellent job of keeping roads, key paths, and campground clear of snow. Kudos. Great night in a quiet campground.

Report Check-In

Perfect location in between the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. Campground is first-come, first-serve and free. Sites did vary a bit in levelness. There's trash cans on each site - that's crazy awesome, with picnic tables and grills.

And you're walking distance to the Navajo National Monument Visitor Center which has a few short but worthwhile hikes right behind it. Would absolutely stay here again.

Oh, size is everything here - I wouldn't try anything bigger than 30' and that might be a stretch based upon your comfort level.

Report Check-In

Great place to park for a bit - free and has beautiful views! right next to the visitor center, which has a short hike to see some old Native Pueblos carved into the walls of the canyon. Most campsites are covered in snow at this time, so you may want to have a shovel just in case (there was only 1 other van here)

Report Check-In

As describe, arrived around 7:00pm and found a spot. Only one other guess.
Bathroom and water available even in winter ! Yeah !
Be careful in the winter not all the site are snowplowed… and I read that the road is not always either (nights - weekends during storm)

Report Check-In

Perfect place to stop for a night. No trouble getting a spot around 9 PM in the winter. Very slow cell service on Tmobile (roaming)

Report Check-In

Beautiful FREE campground. ABSOLUTELY NO FIRES.

Vehicle restriction is 28 feet. After visiting, I interpret that as meaning no truck OR trailer over 28 feet, but a combined length that is longer is okay.

2 reasons for the restriction.
1) the sites are shallow and a long vehicle would not fit without sticking out into and blocking the narrow, one way road.

2) there is a tight-ish turnaround at the loop. a large rv wouldn't make it but anything that can fit into a site can make it. I did it no problem in a 20 foot truck and 20 foot trailer.

There are a handful of double wide sites that you could disconnect and park your trailer next to your vehicle.

There is call service here but no data for miles with t-mobile. according to the website, no one gets data service there.

I visited on a Thursday night and only 3 other vehicles were there. Stars were beautiful and its very dark. Was high 20's at night. The water has been shut off for the season. There are bathrooms but I did not look to see if they were still open or what kind they were.

Report Check-In

Beautiful FREE campground. ABSOLUTELY NO OPEN FIRES. There's about 20 sites here of varying sizes.

Vehicle length limit is listed at 28 feet. After visiting here, I interpret this to me no truck OR trailer over 28 feet, but a combined length longer seemed fine. 2 reasons for the restriction.

1) the sites are relatively shallow, and if you have an individual unit longer than 30 feet, you will probably be sticking out into and blocking the narrow one way road.

2) there is a tight-ish turn around in the loop. If you have a large RV you aren't going to make it. Basically, any vehicle that can fit into a site should be able to make the turn around no problem. I did it in a 20 foot truck and 20 foot trailer.

There are a handful of double wide spots where you can disconnect and park your vehicle next to your trailer. Again though, a large RV isn't going to make it.

For smaller trailers, there are also roadside parking spots intended for tent campers but can be used for your vehicle.

Was here on a Thursday night and only 3 other vehicles were here. Was in the high 20's at night. Beautiful, short hikes in the morning around the monument.

Report Check-In

As everyone else has said, it's amazing that this is a free campsite. Hardly anyone else here in mid November, though there is snow and ice on the ground. 2 bars Verizon service.

Report Check-In

Can't believe this is a free Campground. Arrived on a Saturday night in October and still many sites available. Flush toilets and grey water disposal in the sunset view Campground, but of you can get away with a vault toilet the canyon view offers a great sunset and sunrise over the canyon. Amazing short hike to the ancient Navajo Cliff settlement as well. Fully paved access to the sunset view Campgroun - apparently good for rigs up to 28'.

Report Check-In

Amazing free campground! Flush toilet, level paved sites, we stayed in #7 with our 18ft campervan. amazing sunset from the site

Nice quiet clean free place with real bathrooms

First come first serve, free camping inside of Navajo Nat’l Monument. About 1 hr from Monument Valley. Limit of 28feet

Report Check-In

Really nice campground. Stayed one night there.

All paved pads. Recent rains have washed some mud/clay onto some sites. Nice little area.

Great free campground on first come first served basis. Picnic tables and grills. Public restrooms. No hookups. Paved road in. Information Center right there. Will come back for sure if in the area again!

all true. So much better than campings where we stayed(and paid)! Some problems to level our campertruck, so took another site, even bigger. Want to stay 2 nights to relax from the crowds in Zion

Great free camp next to a monument was quite filled first come first served great little spot.

Report Check-In

Highly recommend even if you’re just needing an overnight spot.
The views are beautiful, the bathrooms are clean, and the sites are easy to access.
Verizon service is spotty, but I get enough to listen to music or a podcast.
No campfires

Update: Park, Campground and Toilets are open.
Really nice here - and cold!

Report Check-In

It's open. Quiet this time of year, only a handful of people here. Still free and still good restrooms.

Report Check-In

Currently closed. The road up to the park is open however the actual campground and park is barricaded with signs "Park Closed". Presumably due to COVID-19

Report Check-In

This is a very nice campground, it has recently been re-paved and it is very well kept. Its not in the depths of nature but is perfect for a nights stay while traveling.

Report Check-In

This campsite is incredible. We got there at 1600 and still lots of spots. The road up to it is paved and mellow but the height gain keeps it nice and cool at night. Great facilities and amazing that it's free!

I thoroughly recommend doing the guided walk with the ranger in the morning to the cave dwellings (Again FREE!). The campsite and walk were two highlights of our trip and didn't cost us a penny!

Report Check-In

This campground is a dream come true! Flush toilets, water, sinks and all this for free!

Report Check-In

Nice little spot, AT&T is spotty, but 4G (not lte) in some areas. No showers, but running water and toilets. Quiet and some nice views, definitely worth a stay for us. Visitor center has a bottle fill station.

Arrived at 7pm and had our choice of many great places to camp. It was clean, quiet and beautiful.
Also it was free so there is nothing but good stuff here. Highly recommended.

Report Check-In

Really a perfect place - free comfortable RV camping within great nature! Nice walks nearby! Sunset!

Report Check-In

Nice free campground indeed. One word of caution. Do not drive from Shonto unless you have 4WD. Many deeper sandy spots throughout the trip. Use 564 in and out.

Empty campground but open ( canyon view was closed), free, VERY clean, water, super clean toilets with a heater so very confortable, tables, trash with clean bags. Visitor center just next to it. Nice walks.

No meio de uma região tão árida, um campings cercado por árvores. Há chuveiro com água quente.

In the middle of such an arid region, a campsite surrounded by trees. There is a shower with hot water.

** Please read **
Awesome free campsite, certainly not 'wild' but extremely well maintained in a lovely area. 10/10

** There was a super cute very light tan dog there, small, very friendly. Had a chihuahua looking face but bigger overall and a stubby / docked tail. He had a foot injury, which my wife (Physician) spent some time dealing with. Can someone please let us know if he is ok / still there. Cutest dog ever, and I believe a reservation dog. He loves to be picked up and cuddled. He needs a good home! Hint, hint. I am startng to really regret not at least taking him somewhere else, my reasoning was that someone else is very likely to take him on and we are really not set up to have a dog with us.
