Arrived here with the bicycle after a four day circuit of Ausangate. Lots of tourists around midday. Motorbikes bring them to the top. We couldn't even take a breath and get of our bikes as a guy came and said we have to pay. 20 Sol pp. Depending on what landscapes you've seen before, Rainbow mountain might not be very spectacular (pictures you see are edited!). Want to take a picture of the huge concrete hand? Buy an extra ticket. We continued to Red Valley. You have to buy a ticket to enter the short trail to the next hill (10 Sol pp). When you reach the top of this hill 10 min later you have to buy another ticket (10 Sol pp). We were standing on the steep path, breathing hard from pushing the bikes uphill and the guy selling the tickets blocked the way and wouldn't even let us lean the bikes against the wall behind him before paying! Tourist crowds: ok. Entrance tickets: ok. But the way this is handled here is ridiculous and not enjoyable!
Hiking/cycling in this area youl'll be asked/forced several times a day to pay to continue on the path. See other entries around Ausangate.

If you come after 13.20 you will be there alone! Beautiful place :)

Well as well are normal ppl and in normal shape. We did the up hike in less then 2 hours and back down again in 1 hours time. All in all 3+ hours with photo session and stopping for a snack on the way up. Started driving at 9 am with our wheeled home from Cusco. Driving up here with 0 cars and fiew motorbikes coming towards us. We where up on the new very big parking lot at noon. Had a lunch and started the hike before 13.00 o’clock. There was a suprise ticket office prox. 500 meters after the parking lot. Did not had any money on us but told the guy we will pay after we come back. Nobody going up at this time. Some people coming down. Had the mountain all for ourselves. After coming back the ticket guy did not bothered us again. With plenty of daylight left we drove to the main road and slept a bit lower altitude. No traffic going down.

If you made it up to this shoulder with a wonderful view (with average condition 2,5h from the car park) you can top it if you also do the last steep ascend to the north (right side when coming up, about 50m in altitude) and have the perfect view.
If you have energy left and want to escape the crowds: pass over the ridge and keep to the left, follow the track a bit down and up again. You come to a checkpoint and pay SOL5pp. You will come to a another very nice red and green valley. For the parking lot you have to return the same way.

I left from the parking lot at 11am and it was still very crowded. I'd suggest starting at 11:30 or noon to dodge the crowds.

Now, the Cusco tour-trip set off from the trail-head around 7:00 am to 8:30 am and they back in Cusco at 1:30 / 2:00 pm from the new parkinglot by the new road (shorter trek). We start the trek from here too at 10:00 am and were alone at the mirador at 12:30 pm 👌🏽(took 2hrs with few breaks) and 1,5 hrs to return from the same way (normal ppl)

We started our track from hanchipacha and just after the village, took a new road which was closed for cars. İt is shorter if you dont take a tour. It took 4,5 hrs to get to the mirador and from the same route we came back in 2,5 hrs. After 2 pm there was nobody and the view was awesome :)

You'll need to be well aclimatised to the very high altitude, fit (and probably young!) to get up there in 3 hrs. Unless you are in that category, allow at least 4 hrs (incl a few breaks) to get there, then 30-60 mins up there to take in the great views and 2.5 - 3 hrs back down. It's a tough walk and we saw a few people giving in to the locals offering horse-rides. The Cusco tour-trips set off from the trail-head around 07:00ish, so if you want to avoid the crowds (typically 150-200 people per day) set-off either well before or well after this time.

My only advice: start really early, around 5h30-6am! If not, you ll regret it..., and being surrounding by hundred of people. We start at 5:30am, we saw nobody, and we were alone at the mirador during maybe 1h. Bring enough water too. There are toilets on the way. Really hard hike (for the end!), but worth it.

its a tough hike from 4400 m to 5070 m! 3 hs in, 2,5 hs out.

Hike with good views. Extremely difficult with the elevation/incline. Give yourself 6-6 1/2 hours roundtrip. Lots of tour buses early in the morning, started around 10 and had the path/mirador to ourselfs.
