Description

Be prepared to be very remote on this route to Chile. To go thru the national park, you will need 150 B per person. You will not have cell phone service. You will be freezing cold. You will not have access to gas or ATM. You will be on a washboard road.

We made a couple mistakes that cost us both our gas and our cash. After chatting with some of the tour guides, we realized we weren’t going to make it and had to turn back. Good luck!

going Laguna Colorado to Alota on a bicycle was a nice ride. a few sections are less great but still rideable (the stretch after reaching the pass from Colorada to the road going straight to Chalviri, the rocky downhill after Capina and some kinda sandy kilometers of the road around Laguna Yapi). going south to north means you'll most likely get tailwinds. the Valle de Rocas (including "llama oasis") on the entire western side of the yapi valley is amazing and well worth making the few detours to see. did the 130km stretch Huavajara - Alota in two days. very recommended alternative to the more popular (for some reason) but harder Laguna route

the route described previously will get you to Chile on a much easier road. there isn't a road on ioverlander or on offline Google maps through this location that eventually meets up with the road that goes on the east side of Colorado, but this road is very similar to the lagunas route as far as the awesome scenery (but without the lagunas) and 10 times easier. we took the west route down and it took us at least 13 bone breaking, white knuckle, hours to get from 701 to the geysers. from the geysers back to 701 via this road was a little more than 5. it's the way that the tour guides go back to uyuni and there aren't any side roads so you don't have to worry about taking the right path. the bottom and the top 70km are fast washboard easily capable of cruising at least 60kmh while the section in the middle is more severe washboard but still cruising faster then I ever got on the west route. if you have seen flamingos before then I don't think it's worth taking the other way if you don't want to.

We did the Laguna Route Villa Mar- Laguna Colorada - Geiser Sol de manana- Laguna Chalviri - Laguna Blanca/Verde - Chile. Ford e350 2wd with high clearance and a fiat ducato no high clearance also 2wd. No Problem! But lots of sandy, sometimes rocky 'streets' prepare to go 10/20kph for 290km. If you are doing it one way to chile, gasoline should be sufficient without extra fuel. It took us 3 days going easy. At night we had -11° and lots of strong wind. The road gets a little bit better after the geysirs heading south. The Lagunas were worth it for us, the colors, lots of flamingos, lamas and vicunas.
