Description

Really, really, REALLY bad road, unpaved dirt road which our navigation showed as regular, paved road. Minimum traffic, minimum cell reception, mostly no cell reception at all, so if anything happens, you are on your own.

Probably my favorite road yet in Colombia. Absolute beautiful views, twists, and turns on this dirt road. At least right now in dry season, I feel that any 2WD car could do this. Conditions are more than fine. We did it in a Ford Transit van and had zero issues.

I was just about to write what the guy before me did :) Definitely doable, we did it with our Renault Trafic with no problems.

Toughest moment was crossing a little river that kinda entered the road right after San Joaquin (also started raining which didn’t help). We just closed our eyes and went for it!

Also before Onzaga google showed that you have to do some kind of detour. We ignored and just went forward. There were signs in fact Via Cerrada, but we and other cars just rode through with no problems.

We are glad we chose this route as the views were too notch.

If you have the right vehicle, this is an absolutely stunning dirt road route. It is 75 km of dirt from Mogotes to Highway 55. This took us approximately 5 hours of driving in a Toyota truck. It is rough at times, but by no means the roughest road we have driven in Colombia. From the sugar cane fields from another era around Mogotes to the patch of páramo as you near highway 55, the scenery was just incredible. Well populated but fincas all along the way and friendly locals in the small towns.

The road is hard to drive and kind of remote. However there is frequent local traffic and buses passing by. In case of emergency / getting stuck remain patient! ;-)
