Costa Rica
We got in contact with Jose through a friend of him in Guatemala to do some maintenance on our VW vanagon Syncro. This guy truly knows what he is doing, there are very few mechanics in central america that know vanagons, let alone syncro's. he owns quite a few and does amazing precise work and engine swaps for his customers and himself.
We needed some custom work like a special pully for our waterpump which he had machined in his shop in San José.
Our suspension bushings on front lower control arms where worn which he imported and replaced and got the van perfectly alligned (better than back in the Netherlands to be honest). He has his adresses around san jose to work with vanagons. (you could call him a project manager aswell since he's got connections all over)
This is his other adress where he has a place to work. The main shop is on San Jose.
If you need some work or maintenance on your vanagon, do it with Jose. Don't expect it to be as super cheap as the Mexican mechanics, but the jobs you get done here stay good for a long time, see it as an investment.
Before you go here, make sure to send him a text since he's moving inbetween his shops. Also if you need parts, reach out to him as early as you can in case it needs to be ordered.

If you need a place to stay contact him, there is an appartment here that you can stay in in case you need to spend some time.

We definitely can not recommend Jose Carlos and his work. He sold us a rebuild engine and installed it. We did not even get 5000 km. It turned out that the sold engine was very bad, not installed properly and we had engine damage due to overheating. We contacted Jose Carlos but he did not feel responsible. He gave us a professional impression at the beginning but we never received an invoice. We suspect he is acting as a private person and not as a company. There are certainly better, more honest and professional mechanics in Costa Rica.
