This is a beautiful, tranquil (and cold) spot next to the water and near the road going to the cave paintings. If you get a permit in Laraos (the entrance point about 45 minutes beforehand) you can fish trout from the lake. We saw LOTS of different types of local birds. We asked permission to camp here at a nearby house, and I suggest you do the same. You pay 5 soles to enter the town of Laraos, but it’s totally worth it. Everything is wonderfully signposted, you get a brochure of the touristic attractions and a map, and there’s free wifi in the plaza.

Good wild camping area. We stopped here for lunch and there are shepherd walls to protect this from the wind
Report Check-InGood spot for bike tourers too! We set up underneath an electricity pylon in a dried up pond - super flat and invisible from the road. We were ready to ask the neighbours for permission but no one appeared at any of the houses. We talked to some construction workers who were very friendly and helpful. We even used their clean (albeit full) portaloo in the morning. There’s a few structures around to tuck under for cooking should there be rain. Very quiet and actually didn’t go below 5C overnight (mid September).
