Description

Officer wanted to see my driving license and insurance. As I didn't have 3rd party insurance for Malawi, he said the fine is 50,000 kwacha. I tried multiple ways around it but he was very determined. There is a police station here in the right side just at the roadblock, they wrote me a receipt and I had to pay that amount... Even trying to explain I'd get the insurance in Karonga. At the border with some help you might find a proper insurance that's not a scam ..

UPDATE OCT 2023 - we were stopped but we did not have to show our insurance! When we had (one stop before) our Comesa was approved. No need to stress about this one based on our experience

We were stopped but did not even have to show our insurance - just a friendly officer that wanted to have small talk with us. One stop before we had to show and we showed them our Comesa, and he approved.

In early December we were fined K100 000 for having no 3rd party insurance here, even though I showed my comprehensive insurance from SA that covers Malawi. We didn't have enough money, so he allowed us to pay K80 000, and gave a receipt for that amount. On our return, we got local 3rd party insurance valid for a month for K35 000 at the border, and it was accepted eith a smile by the same cop who fined us in December.
