We arrived at 14.35 and still could do the 1h tourist tour at 15.00, before that we watched the movie. We liked the tour, they went just for us in a big coach bus which was a bit weird. On the way we passed a brazilian bus which was full! They have the mentioned open top bus, but the rest seems to be the same tour.

Still a must see! it's one of the 7 marvellous of the modern world. we arrived at 8h30, made the reservation and at 9h, the movies begin, at 9h30 you take the bus and made a tour, we had lots of information and she answered all of our questions. For a free tour, it was really nice! But careful for the time, it's open at 7h30 but closed at 14h45.

We visited the dam in the afternoon and went also for the light show in the evening. Both were different and nice to see. But there is no technical explanation nor guided visit of the technical area. We think it must be too difficult to organise this for the many people that visit the dam. So, if you like to know more, we think you must make a booking for the technical tour in advance. We also can recommend to visit the Modelo Reducido de la Represa, a little bit further on the road. The 1/100 reduced model of the dam gives a good overview. A guide explained about it. Reservations and information: https://cti.itaipu.gov.py/

We emailed for the technical tour 3 days before and they sent us a response saying at least 1 week notice is necessary. We came by anyway and did their less-technical, more-touristy panoramic tour. It took a little over one hour for the whole thing. Short film at the beginning, a quick stop at the Mirador, and the rest you're in the bus seeing it from there and listening to the guide talk about everything you're passing. Our tour was in Spanish. We enjoyed it, would love to return one day for the more technical one. WiFi at the visitor center, clean bathrooms, cafe and ATM machine. Everything free on the Paraguayan side.

we were told the technical tour mist be booked 2-4weeks ahead. basic tour is imho very poor, just one view point and a ride around. the "film" is basically a 15min propaganda video based on base facts that you read before and after it anyways. none negative impacts or complexicity mentioned. unlike on Brazilian side no other tours are available. hence Brazilian side offers a lot more but there it is expensive, here it is all free. wifi, canteene, toilets and free parking, no overnight though

Report Check-In

The technical tour has to be reserved at least ten days up front.

We haven‘t seen the power plant yet, will do that tomorrow. Just make sure, if you want to see the tecnical tour, book ahead via email ([email protected]). For further information, see picture attached.

Highly recommend the technical tour of Itaipu. It takes around 2 hours and you will see and learn a lot more than on the superficial tour. Well worth planning ahead and doing a reservation! When you go inside the dam you can not only see the generators, but also the control room ... and you get the chance to walk inside the walls...and really get a feeling for how gigantic this place is.

We went on the 10am free tour which begins with a 20 minute film in a really smart and comfortable cinema. The film was in Spanish with English Subtitles and extremely interesting. the tour of the Dam is around an hour and also interesting enough too and on a lovely coach. All very professional and the whole dam sight (pun intended) is immaculate. It was Friday so we bagged a couple of seats for the Light show starting at 9pm so drove back at 8pm... Oh dearie me... Talk about 'all the gear and no idea'... It started well with dramatic music, a great vantage point and slowly the dam lit up. It really is a wonderful sight. and that was the end! no flashing colours set to music etc. they REALLY have missed a trick here as they clearly and quite rightly are proud of this fantastic acheivement in Paraguay, but considering the amount of Electricity they produce they should really spare a little bit of it for a more memorable light show... for the right reasons.

Free of charge, no parking fee. The travellers Reling prices must have been on the brasilian side. There it is 42 pP and 20 for parking. Here you can get electricity for free with ECE plugs- at the parking.

The visitor center on the Paraguayan side is the place where you can book 3 different kinds of tours through the Itaipu dam, all free of charge, all with modern busses, all with a film in advance. Tour 1 - touristic tour. You can just come and take the next free bus. A bit disappointing because only in Spanish, only one stop at a Mirador. Tour 2 - lightshow on Fridays and Saturdays. To be booked in advance in the visitor center. We liked it very much. It gave us a good idea of the huge dimensions of the dam. Tour 3 - technical tour. To be reserved via email a few days ahead (see web page of Itaipu Binacional). Very interesting because we went into the dam and the machine house, saw the huge generators.

Send an email to [email protected] one week in advance if you want to do the technical visit, include names, passport numbers and nationality. They have bilingual guides for this type of visit. Free of charge too. Monday to Friday 8am or 1pm

ALL TOURS FOR FREE! They offer the same tours than one the Brazilian side for free! You need to sign up for the special tour first online (the tour where u get to see the generator all inside the dam) or if you are lucky right in the office. Did not know that the special tour was offered here for free too so we "burned" the 83 reais per person. Thought this should be shared... www.itaipu.gov.py

This is the visitor center for the world's most powerful hydroelectric power station. With a dam of 8km length, it's also one of the largest in the world. If you arrive with a motorhome higher than 3m, use the bus parking lane. We took a tour to visit the inside of the dam, have a look at the power generators and control rooms. The 2nd part was an open top bus ride on the dam itself (altogether 3h, 82R/p, tours in English or Spanish available). Very impressive, well worth the money. Free WiFi, Bistro for snacks.
