Raptor Lake is an evap pond for Holloman AFB further back than Holloman Lake. Have to go through 2 cattle guard gates which are always unlocked. a couple of tight turns. It's primitive camping not far from the freeway but far enough not to hear it. Big rig accessible. there was a large 5th wheel out here. Plenty of space but not a lot of flat spots. Occasionally a jet flies over or the cows mooing is the only noise I heard. Yes free roaming cattle so watch your step.
TMobile decent 4GLTE spotty 5g. Was able to stream Netflix.
Was told by a park ranger the military does occasional jamming.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
What a great place! Lots of spots beyond the main area and we didn’t even have to try to get level. Just stopped the van. All the other reviews are accurate. Interestingly enough my topo map doesn’t show the road around the lake.
Report Check-InPrevious reviews are accurate. Very easy to access if you have a truck/SUV/Van. The bigger vehicles were limited to the main entrance due to the very tight turn after the main lot. Spent one night here after visiting WSNP. I had the whole area to myself.
Full Verizon LTE. No jet activity the whole time I was here. Incredible sunsets.
Report Check-InOk place to start early in White Sands, but great to see all the birds on and around the lake! Very busy in the front. Super windy, exposed. The whole area on the north and west side of the lake seems to be fenced with no lake access past this marker.
Report Check-Invery nice place quiet, sometime army jets take real close by, plenty room, there is one spot we can drive close to the water (What is coming out of the filtration station of the military base) recommended not to have anything to do with it. That spot near the water is very easy to sink if not 4×4. I got stock... A basic 4x4 couldn't get me out waiting for AAA. Beside that it is very nice.
Report Check-InAwesome spot!! Def go past 2nd cattle guard if you can. Also if ur not experienced with beach parking stay to front of the lake. No services but clean. Lots of campers in front area. Out of sight on back beach. Only person in back area
Report Check-InGoogle Maps DOES NOT know the turn into the campsite. So it stops on the highway and indicates you need to walk into Holloman Lake. Since this is a high-speed highway this confusion can be dangerous.
The real turn the campsite is at (32.8039665, -106.1228744) or "Holloman Lake (Public Access)" in Google Maps.
Report Check-InWe stayed here for one night, super quiet, dunes we awesome.
Be careful if you drive on the beach, you’ll get stuck if you don’t know what you’re doing.
Drive on the road past the top part of the lake, inside of the first open shut gate that you see is where we stayed.
If you stay high up on the hill you’ll be okay
We’re in a low clearance, very heavy sprinter
Report Check-InStopped here after visiting White Sands National Park. Set up at 4:00, about 10 other rigs set up already. Fairly quiet, as described by others, road noise, AF jets. No odors from lake, bugs minimal.
Report Check-InGreat spot! Road is pretty good going all the way around the lakes with spots scattered around. We drove around the lakes and parked on the far side, far away from the many other vehicles at the front. Cows freely roam this area so please respect them and don’t litter! Also spotted a herd of Gemsbok. The air base has jets taking off/flying around regularly - loud but very cool. We felt a distant missile explosion from white sands missile range, scary but also very cool! Beautiful views and sunsets. We stayed here for about a week and a half no problem.
Report Check-Inamazing spot. we went way to the end which is around the top of the pond and down. We are on our own little peninsula. Beautiful for the sunset. We see snow capped mountains to the north. Beautiful mountains towards White Sands. Clean, quiet place. ( minus the AFB jets, which I love to hear and watch, and some highway noise. But not enough to be annoying.
