We did the road coming from Huaraz until Huallanca. Great views and many tiny tunnels.
We could still see the rest of the landslides, but they were working on it and the road was easily doable with a 2WD.

This entrance to Canon del Pato was closed at the time. We had to take a shortcut via ruta 103 and ruta 885 over Huaylas into the canyon. It's a nice road for motorcycles, but we wouldn't recommend it for big rigs. Don't expect to be fast on that detour.

We were driving this road randomly and had never heard of the canyon before - just wanted a quick way to go from the coast to Huaraz. Ended up stopping multiple times to admire the scenery. It’s one of the coolest and most scenic drives we’ve done in all of Latin America! Highly recommend taking this road. Conditions were not too bad, some potholes and narrow in parts but also not much traffic.

From here to Chuquicara is amazing! And it’s paved!

Nice road to take with nice view.
Probably not the best idea in rainy season.

Nice canyon and funny road.
For CYCLISTS:
We managed to cycle without working lights, our bikes had reflectors, people drove with lights, they horn many times, tunnels are not long and in great conditions. But be sure to have a helmet! Rocks falls in front of my bicycle.
Have a safe trip!

True is that tunnels are really nice and adventure when bus or big camioneta comes from oposite way. Lovely view, but around this spot is not place for overnight. So enjoy views and go on.

Holy crap. This canyon is beautiful. The drive really isn't bad though. The road is in good shape and there is typically enough visibility to know if anyone's coming before entering a tunnel.

Lots of blind, one-lane corners though. Toque that claxon!

Tons of good wild camping options, most of the canyon is pretty deserted. We could have easily made Caraz from Trujillo in one day, even leaving late, but stayed in the canyon for a night just because we enjoyed it so much.

nice drive. the tunnels can be pretty scary but fun at times. did get 2 flat tires between trujillo and laguna 69. make sure you have backup.

If it has been raining, like it is now, then be prepared of stoppages. At the Chuquicara end Police where dragging passanger cars over the fallen dirt/cravel. Amusing site even for the owners of those cars. Big busses and trucks had made so deeb tracks that normal cars couldn’t pass in their own. Good tyres and a bit higher clearance and we where ok even with 2wd. Surprisingly busy road. Of this canyon is too civilized for you, then also drive the next one up north.
