Description

One of the 7 natural wonders of the world. More seriously, it's an absolutely amazing sight in Namibia, a must-go if you are in the area ! One of our top 3 experiences in 8 months in Africa !
We came with a guide (JP from Red Dunes Safari, listed on Ioverlander in Walvis Bay) and we definitely think it's the best way to come here, as it can be quite dangerous to come alone. But in fact, you only need one if you want to go back to WB by the dunes.

Adventurers can come alone by the seaside from Walvis Bay but you need to feel comfortable enough with sand driving and the fact that you will be between high dunes and the ocean's waves for a while. You absolutely need to check the tide time. If its high tide road is impassable and the risk of losing your vehicle in the intertidal zone is possible, so be very careful and prepared. Of course, it won't hurt to contact a professional guide and ask for advice and more information before going there on your own...

The reward is worth it : in the morning on a clear day, the view from the top dunes is simply out of this world. I'm not 100% sure but it might be the only place in the world where such high dunes (200 to 300 m) directly touch the sea/ocean for km and km...
You need a permit to come see this unique place, available in WB or Swakop. Should be 150 pp.

Great Tour about 4h driving from WalvisBay and back.
In WalvisBay are some Tour companys. They all have almost the same price and subject:
Driving from WalvisBay to this point; 1 way at the beach and the other way through the dunes. It depends on the Tide.
Some tours are offering lunch, too.

Misty Tours (see comment on travelling 4.2.24) wants 2200.- same as all other tour operators. No discount for iOverlanders. Marius phone number does not work anymore...

Our experience with the Misty shores company has been spectacular. We would never have thought that the views and driving between dunes would excite us in that way!!! We have been traveling for many years and it is perhaps the best landscape we have ever seen, we are left speechless. We believe that it is not advisable to do it on your own since the dunes are very dangerous. We spoke to the boss (Marius) and asked him if he could make an offer for Overlanders and he told us that he would be delighted, that he already knew that people who travel this way manage a tight budget. The offer for 2024 is as follows:
If you want to drive your own vehicle with 2 people, accompanied by a professional to advise you (dune driving!), the price will be 2500N$ (if you are more people, only the price of the permit to enter this area is added). N$350).
The price for taking the tour in the Misty Tours company car will be 1650N$ PP. I think it is an unbeatable price and well worth it.
To access the offer you just have to say that you are an overlander Contact information by phone or WhatsApp

We hope you take advantage of it and enjoy it as much as we do!

Very big dunes indeed! We played it safe and went with a guide and his 4x4. Although we crossed Sahara and Angolan desert I’m not sure we would have been that confident to go on our own (and that our car would cope with it in terms of weight and power).

The drive on the coast (between the big dunes and the sea) seems quite ok though, if you plan it accordingly to the tide chart.

The piste from Walvis to the crossing (Big Dunes VS between sea and dunes) is easy with a regular 4x4, just make sure the tires got the right pressure.

We went in the afternoon and the tracks were very easy to follow, it’s like a motorway, you won’t get lost.

We triée yo do it by ourselves but we couldn’t our 4x4 with tents up was too heavy and too low and without enough power. We get stuck and then we could not go to the dune. So we did it with Ontjou tours, Codi +264 816214497, super nice and very experienced. So a great experience. Highly recommended!
We could be there a moment alone before other tourists. Incredible. We paid 3000$N for 4 (2adults/2children). We negotiated, he asked 5400 at the beginning.
