Description

We were asked to pull over for a police checkpoint. They asked for our license and title for our car. They claimed that our lights were illegal (we have a few extra lights mounted on our truck). They said we were going to have to pay a fine and they threatened to keep my driver's license. We knew they were trying to get us to pay a bribe so we just said, “That’s fine. Take the license and give us the ticket”. They kept repeating their threat to keep the license. They even said “Aren’t you too busy to deal with this? When do you leave Nicaragua?” but we just kept saying “That’s fine. We have many weeks in the country. You can give us a ticket”. Eventually, after about 5 minutes of this back and forth, they gave us back the license and let us leave.

Do not pay any bribes to these crooked cops!! They are bluffing!

Still there, similar story - wanted to charge me a fine for not wearing a seatbelt (which I wasn't - stupid, but -hot!) - they took my licence, I argued (told them I'd just taken it off as I pulled up, which one of them thought he'd seen me do), eventually after much 'oh mujer, qué vamos hacer?' from the jefe, I told him I'd like his badge number and photo to discuss it with his superiors. He suddenly got busy pulling other people over and then gave my licence back and told me it was my lucky day.

I concur with the original poster, stand your ground, these guys are in it for the mordidas..
