Description

Ivory Coast: Very relaxed boarder, very friendly and fast. Just don’t forget to stop at the police checkpoint before the boarder to get your passport stamped. There is no sign. Otherwise you have to go back later. At the boarder, there is only custom, because the new police building is not in use. They stamp your carnet. Nothing to pay.
Ghana: Very friendly and welcoming. They gave us 60 days (we had Visa) after asking and stamped the CdP. If you don’t have a CdP they said, they will do a TIP (50-70 Cedi depending on car size) valid as long as your insurance. They also checked yellow fever and Covid vaccination. Short look from outside into the car. Nothing to pay with Visa and CdP.

Possibility to change CFA to Cedis (in a little shop close to the office, not the best rate but okay as we had to pay in cedis.)
No sim card available. Not possible to buy a simcard in the official shops as you need a Ghana identity card…
ATM can be founded in Dormaa (first city after the border)

Latest Check-Ins

Since 1st May 2024, visa prices have changed. VOA (emergency visa) is 200 dollars and 48h transit visa is 65 or 70 dollars (can't remember exactly). Official websites haven't updated yet but we spent enough time calling officials to verify the change.

TIP still at 50 cedi (motorbike)

Otherwise everyone on both sides are nice and welcoming. Paperwork and a slow connection made the whole process last a bit more than 3h for three people

ivory coast to Ghana
no CPD or visa in advance.
relaxed and friendly border. very little traffic through here. leaving ivory coast straight forward. process took a little while to get the emergency visa for Ghana but paid 150 US dollars each and TIP was 2500 CFA.

Report Check-In

Easy border crossing, come here if you travel without CDP.

Leaving Ghana the customs guy took back our temporary import paper, then to another room for passport stamping. They take an unnecessarily long time to write down data like where did you come from where are you going & car details, profession. After all this they stamp us and we are free to leave.

Entering Ivory coast, parked on the road and walked up to the building, two different rooms for entering or exiting. Make yourself known and hand over the passports, they make you wait outside on the seats until they are ready for you. Very little English spoken, the guy inputs information in book like Mother/ Fathers name and your profession, then stamps the passport. I had a hotel address ready to tell them but they never asked. Outside there is a small hut to check yellow fever certificate.

After this we drive to customs to make the temporary import paper as we travel without CDP. One guy check inside the van and once he was satisfied sent us into the office to make the TIP. Simple enough, again very slow to input information but we got it in the end, the guy speaks only french and to my knowledge didn't ask for anything more.

On the road to Abengourou there are many police checks as well as 2 drug checks, one guy asking if I smoke crack or heroin, I just laughed at him. Some police checks sitting in the shade by the road blow their whistle just as I pass them, I didn't bother stopping and they never came after me.

Côte d'Ivoire>Ghana.
No visa for Ghana in advance, no CDP.
No problems!

Rather quiet boarder post, officers on both sides (very) friendly, but also partly (very) slow.

No bribes asked at any time except at the "health check" on Côte d'Ivoire's side.

Côte d'Ivoire:
1. Customs on the left side: Kept our Vignette Touristique for themselves.
2. Immigration Building on the left: Wrote down our information from our passports and the caravan's documents in a book, but forgot to stamp us out-we realized it before literally crossing the boarder and went back. ;)
3. "Health Check" on left side in front of the Immigration Building: Noted down our passport information, asked to see the vaccination carnet (but did not take a closer look) and then very fast and directly asked for biscuits-as we happened to actually have one package open, we handed it over.

Ghana side:

1. Immigration and Customs Offices in the building on the left:
1a. Immigration office
As we had no visa, two VoA ("Emergency Entry") for 150 USD (1905 Cedi) each were prepared, valid for 30 days (did not ask for more days)-here, they took our passport information and prepared some stickers which we had to sign.
As we had to give an exact adress of our next stop (for them, this was only a person or a hotel), we quickly searched online for the latter in the next village (Dormaa) and gave its details.
(SIM-Card from Côte d'Ivoire still working here very good :))
1b. Customs's office
For the TIP, we got 60 days for 50 Cedis-this amoint, we could pay in CFA (3000).
2. Building on the right side across the street:
Got the visa stamped in our passports and paid the money (with official receipts).
As we only had CFAs availabe, the (really awesome ) officer called for a money changer from a shop nearby (on Ghana side) and we could change the money for a very fairy rate.

No health check or vaccination check for us that day.

Whole procedure took us 3,5 hours.

Had our visas done in Manrovia. We got the TIP (no CDP) after the migration for 50 Cedis. No problem for us on that day.

Report Check-In

Entering Ghana without visa or Cdp. We had no major problems, it was just a slightly long process of over 2 hours. Make sure you get your stamp out of IC, he kept giving me back my passport without the stamp, he stamped my partners straight away but 3 or 4 times I gave my passport back to him before i finally got the stamp.

Ghana side - First was customs to make the temporary import permit, police said it is usually for ecowas cars but as we have ecowas insurance they used our id number from that & I also gave the international driving licence. Slow at inputting the information but got there in the end, allows the car 60 days in Ghana. It was supposed to cost 50 cedis but when I asked to pay in CFA she said okay but then never asked again for money so it was free for us.

Second was the visa on arrival, the cost was $150 or 100k CFA and we got 60 days entrance allowed. Again, simple process but unnecessarily long. In the end it was easier than I was expecting to enter Ghana this way, it is a small and quiet border post, a couple police asked for a gift or "something to remember you by" I just replied no I don't have sorry and they left it alone.

Report Check-In

They check yellow fiver vacination. Didn't ask about COVID.

Visa on Arrival - Available = 150$ for EU passport. After they ask for small gift (extra money). I make sam joke and they refused.

I was in border on sundey - they work normaly. Very rare border for foreiners. Officera very friendly.

After 10 km to the city, Taxi cost - 10 cedi.

CDI -> Ghana

CDI side:
Immigration at the start of the village will before the border - no barrier, just look out for the police buildings on the right.
Quick, easy.

Sanitation also wanted to check Yellow Fever Vaccination, but this turned out to only be a long con to get a bribe for not having proof of Meningitis C Vaccine!
I ended up laughing it off and there wasn't a problem.

Douane easy. One with CDP had to wait a little bit for the Chef to finish his lunch.
I didn't have any documentation as couldn't get the Vignette Touristique on entry due to Douanes being closed or uncooperative.
No problem - just didn't go in. Very relaxed.

Ghana side:
Immigration easy friendly and efficient.
Quick yellow fever card and temperature check.

Customs:
The one with CdP had no issue.
They checked the VIN on the bike.

Me without CdP, they did issue a TIP, but clearly are becoming more reluctant or frustrated to do this. They explained that normally this free TIP is only issued to ECOWAS vehicles, and they are getting frustrated by regularly issuing fraudulent TIPs to non ECOWAS residents and vehicles.
After explaining, still issued the TIP.
Be friendly, understanding and apologetic and I don't think there will be any issues, but this method's days may be numbered.

Required:
Registration document
International Drivers Permit
Passport
ECOWAS Insurance

Paid 3000CFA

Whole border took about 3 hours

It’s possible to get a VOA.

We got ours at the embassy in Abidjan. Just for your information.

It’s cheaper to get it in Abidjan. But if you don’t want to wait or you want to skip driving in capitals that can be an option for you.

Ivory Coast -> Ghana

Come here if you don’t have a CDP.

Exit Ivory Coast:

You get your passport stamped in the past village 500 meters before the border.

At the border they take a copy of your vignette touristique and stamp it. Took almost 40 min.

Entry Ghana:

Get your passport stamped.

Get the TIP for 50 cedis or 3.000 cfa. They asked for 10.000 cfa bribe. The “local” before me paid it. I said “my friends didn’t mention that payment” and I was free to go.

Whole border crossing took two hours.

Get cash at an ATM in the next town.

You can use an online sim by Airalo for Ghana 5 US = 1 GB for a week.

Health check:
They take your temperature

Everything remains the same. Somfynafrica explains it perfectly. Without CdP 50 Cedis per TIP
