Latest Check-Ins

You can no longer drive to this location at the repeater station. These is another parking area higher up on the mountain but driving out onto the hillside as pictured in some of the photos is no longer available and was always illegal. Follow the national forest motor vehicle use map and there is no camping within 300 ft of parking area. Questionable is sleeping in a vehicle in the parking lot is allowed. Any vehicle that can make the switchbacks should be able to drive up.

Saw the most beautiful sunset camping here! Our spot was all the way at the top, a very short walking distance from where we parked at a cell tower. There was an established fire ring. My Crosstrek had no problem making it up the road.

Report Check-In

A handful of designated camping spots with flat parking and fire rings, as well as roadside pull offs large enough for a van. Beautiful views, very quiet, and a nice relief from the July heat. Weather changed pretty quick, I didn’t see a chance of rain for Damascus or Grayson but it rained most of the night.
Really a great, quiet spot.

gorgeous spot with incredible panoramas. Had the whole mountaintop to myself! Got to take it slow but the Dodge Ram 2500 van made it up the road ok. Highly recommended.

stunning views with ample room

the road is a bit rough but definitely passable for most vehicles

a few parking spots where the pin is set with more on the other roads up there. go right at the fork at the top of the mountain - 4-5 level spots available with perfect views.

Incredible night spent on the mountain after ditching a nearby thunderstorm. Sky cleared a little for an ok’ing sunset. The sunrise in the morning was spectacular! Saw a couple of hummingbirds and about twenty deer.

this was a great spot. the exact coordinates lead to one of the worst sites up here, but there are two really good, private flat areas with views. we stayed in one of them. probably our favorite campsite of the entire time we have been east. nice escape from hot temps since the location is wide open and high elevation for East coast standards. would definitely come back again. no cell service but an excellent starlink connection!

THE VIEWS WOW! stayed here Thursday night and there were only a few other people camping in cars or hiking the AT. the actual campsite views are a bit obstructed by trees, but there’s a fire pit along the road about 200ft before you get to the site with epic views, so I parked there for the night. A few other camp sites as well. Almost no service with Verizon.

Great spot. Was able to make a long range 2M ham radio contact to Tennessee thanks to the elevation.

Report Check-In

This was a nice spot but we didn’t really see more than one decent spot to park. There were remnants of other fire rings off the side of some of the roads in the area but not really space to pull a camper up to. Anyway, the views were nice and we had okay Verizon cell signal. I posted two photos with our van and the views once the fog and clouds cleared a little.

Great spot with incredible views. Road up was gravel but most any car can navigate. A couple other vehicles up here the night we camped. Very poor cell signal.

Report Check-In

Lovely spot at the top of the mountain. The gravel road is quite tricky, lot of rocks and holes but still manageable with a low clearance. We witnessed a beautiful sunset, you have to get lucky though, weather can change rather quickly and you can have fog within 5 min. The night we stayed a couple of cars came to see the stars but we were the only ones actually staying for the night. I recommand!

We camped out on a cloud covered evening. There are several small parking areas above the tree line on Whitetop. I’ve been up there previously for the view, and it is certainly beautiful.

At just over 5,500 feet elevation, you are able to see Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina from this campsite. This is the 2nd tallest Mountain in Virginia. You will follow a gravel forest service road to a loop, then turn up the hill to your right to camp. The Appalachian Trail passes through this campsite, so you will most likely see hikers. You will be surrounded by the rare sight of Red Spruce trees which aren't commonly found in southern states.
