Just outside of the Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge and inside the Kootenai NF there’s a lake access turn off/informal campsite with a firepit. Beautiful, remote area that was designated an “International Dark Sky Sanctuary” in 2022. Only suitable for self-contained vans/truck campers. No cell service and no services anywhere nearby. Please do what you can to take care of this spot!

We stayed here for one night. This place is on a lake and has tons of wildlife (ground squirrels, water fowl, birds, etc). We had a very peaceful stay - the area is very private except for a few homes across the lake. There is noise from the wildlife and minimal road noise (more common during the day, less common at night). There’s space for maybe 4 smaller set ups. There were 2 fire rings.
The road to get here was very long - we drove about 15 minutes on unpaved road. We didn’t need 4WD - it was just gravel road with lots of potholes/ruts. A bigger rig would be fine on the gravel road but would have a hard time getting into the actual spot (driving a bit through the forest with a tight turn/deep ruts) - we were in a pickup truck and it was fine.
Highly recommend! Great view and great spot. No cell/data service. Definitely download the map on Google ahead of time.
