Description

A World Heritage Site of truly impressive proportions. It is considered the richest archaeological site from the Parthian Empire known to date.
Hatra was a strongly fortified caravan city and capital of the small Arab Kingdom of Hatra, located between the Roman and Parthian/Sasanian Empires. Hatra flourished in the 2nd century, and was destroyed and deserted in the 3rd century. Its impressive ruins were discovered in the 19th century. You will need to get tickets at the Ministry of Antiquities in Mosul as you will need to show these at every checkpoint on the way to the site from HWY 1. This makes it challenging when you came from the south.
EDIT: I bought a ticket today, 21 April 2024, right here at the site. No need to go to Mosul first!
It’s worth the effort. They are working at having tickets available at the site. Old tickets may work through the checkpoints (?).

Report Check-In

According to multiple Mosul guides it is not possible to buy tickets at Hatra gate. So tickets must be bought in Mosul at the moment. Maybe this will change again in the future.

Report Check-In

It's called Hatra. Tickets are now available here. I rolled up to the gate, and the guard called a guy who came by car and sold me the ticket for 25'000 Dinar.
At the 3 checkpoints after turning off from the highway, I explained with Google translate that tickets are available at the site. Checkpoints are rather serious, but friendly.
