Latest Check-Ins

Fees are as described below - incredibly expensive. Seeing the sunrise over the crater though was otherwordly and the crater itself was beautiful with so much wildlife. For us it was worth it to do it once. Try and get in as early as possible. There's lots of nice picnic areas in the crater itself. The road from crater to Serengeti is the worst corrugations we've ever experienced in Africa - beware!! Yes there are a lot or people who will ask for things if you stop in the areas near the crater. Beautiful landscapes. If you're here between Dec-Mar go to Ndutu!! It's part of the NCA not serengeti so you can work that into your fees to spend less time in serengeti. The migration will be here and it's an incredible area (see entry for great migration camps for more info).

There really is no reason to visit Nogorogo unless going to the crater, but the crater is incredibly expensive. We opted against the crater and instead drove through to get to Serengeti. It's rather unfortunate to have to pay such an expensive fee to drive a terrible wash board road, just to get to the entrance of the Serengeti (also expensive and facilities are run down but at least there is game to see.) It's also unfortunate that when in Nogorogo you cannot stop anywhere without seeing cows (or goats or sheep) and masaai people, who will run up to you and beg for money. It's unfortunate that this behavior exists, let alone is condoned. If possible, would recommend avoiding Nogorogo. There are other gates to enter the Serengeti.

We had planned to do a self drive Serengeti/Ngorongoro trip but after receiving the fees below we decided to book a 3day/2night tour for $500pp. Similar price and less hassle.

Ngorogoro and Serengeti fees including VAT.
$70.80pp (24hr) entry fee.
$47.2 camping pppn.
$47.20 OR $177 (24hr) per car.
(1999kg OR 2000+kg)
$295 crater fee per car for Ngorongoro crater (6hrs).

We were told by the Ngorongoro info centre in Arusha that you also had to pay the entry fee pp and car fee to transit through Ngorongoro to get to the Serengeti which increases the price a lot, however we noticed on the tours they didn't, we just paid $70.80 pp twice for 24hrs in each park, so no transit cost.

Unsure if you need a guide for self drive, we heard mixed info. The roads aren't great, very wash boarded so hard on your car, but having a guide or not won't change that. Think it's $25 per day.

Overall incredibly expensive and crowded, it is beautiful but there are equally beautiful and affordable parks elsewhere!

Be aware:
Permit valid for 24h into conservation area, crater fee valid for 6h (between 6am-6pm). If self-driving: you need an official guide to enter into the crater. Road condition inside conservation area and crater rather poor.
