Malawi
Surreal castle with beautiful private beach. Rooms (incl tower suite!). Nicely set up campsite with private braai/power/sinks for each pitch. Modern ablutions include open-air showers.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Wonderful campsite with pool and squash court. $15 a night. Hot showers. Electricity at the pitch and water, braii and fire pit. Also food prep area at each pitch. Lovely lake view. Good security and privacy.
I am the owner, so probably biased! Russ
We did not stay here but dropped in for lunch on our way past.
The road in looked like it hadn't been used for a week, but don't let that deceive you. This place is beautiful, very friendly staff and wonderful food, amazing beach and a lovely pool. We didn't see the rooms or the campsite. But all the facilities we saw and used were really great.
Brilliant camping , you must check this place out . Kate and Russ have created an incredible lodge and camping area . Popped in for a drink and camped on the beach for 2 days . Highly recommended
Report Check-InAfter a big revamp we are now open.
Free use of pool and squash court and free wi-fi (Starlink) included in your stay!
Sorry folks, we have had to close due to ill health.
Updates to follow, but CLOSED for now.
Report Check-InHello
I am the owner of the castle. We are OPEN again!
You will be made very welcome.
Russ
Report Check-InHi all
I am the owner of Kachere Kastle.
Please be advised the lodge and campsite are now closed until 4 July. Sorry to disappoint.
This is definitely open!!!!
We stayed again for the second time in 9 months. Russ is still here and has not retired!.
We came for the second time as its the best camp site on the lake.
Report Check-InSeems open. I just passed by, but all signposts are up. Might be only over Christmas/New Year but I can’t imagine a place like this would be closed.
Report Check-InSituated at Kachere Beach, Lake Malawi, Kachere Kastle is a delightful place to stay or camp. The bar, pool, beach with deck chairs and even sun hats create a real island-style atmosphere. Russell, the owner is friendly, his facilities clean and beautiful and his food excellent.
Report Check-InThis place is definitely open! We stayed 4 nights. Russ the owner was incredibly friendly the staff were helpful and again friendly. The campsite was one of the best we have stayed at on our travels. Each site has sink, running water and electricity. The ablutions are clean, with flush toilets and plenty of hot water. We camped on the beach but there are sites just set back on the grass if preferred. Only needs campers to visit, can't recommend enough.
Report Check-Invery good place on the beach
big beach near a fishing village
not private ablutions
everything is clean
price 10000mwk/pppn for camping
We visited the lodge to see if we could stay but there was a sign saying “lodge closed” on the boom, the people staying inside the lodge area told us the same thing. Perhaps call ahead before heading down here.
Report Check-InA castle next to the lake. Very nice site. We camped on the lake. Camping spots are well maintained with electric lights, braai/bbq area and a basin for dishes. Swimming pool that can be used by campers when the hotel is not busy. Warm showers and clean toilets. Very helpful owners and staff.
Report Check-InWe are unsure what the hype is about. The castle building seems tacky and it feel like an all inclusive type of hotel (even the restaurant feels somewhat different country). The restaurant is extremely expensive (breakfast 10000 kwacha!) so we didn't eat there. The ablutions are very nice but not private at all - campers on the beach side can see you shower (so do the walking by people). If the beach spaces are taken then you have no lake view at all plus construction workers passing by frequently. Very friendly couple looking after the place currently. On one of the nights the movie screening was arranged on the roof which we enjoyed very much. Also, you are welcome to practice yoga on the roof of the building. Swimming pool and restaurant open to campers only when the hotel isn't busy.
Report Check-Init was okay.
very expensive
dinner is currently 30usd (20,000 kwacha), it was descent but not worth that much. this is not London or NYC!!
campers have to pay for squash court... and dining/bar area is reserved for hotel guests.
ablutions okay, open air showers are nothing to brag about, no privacy, visible from two nearby campsites.
Report Check-InBeautiful surroundings, nice pool with bar, big beach. Ablutions clean and pretty new, per campsite a outdoor kitchen and braai place. Lovely place! Price 7,000 kwacha pppn. Free and fast WiFi.
Report Check-InWow, wow, wow!! What an incredible place!! We saw the road sign for a castle and had to take a look - ended up staying 2 nights. We camped next to the castle amongst bamboo looking out to the lake. Cooking/washing stations with bbq grill. Luxurious hot shower with view to lake. 10usd pppn. We ate at the restaurant twice - it was 20,000 each for a 3 course meal - more than we would normally spend but totally worth it!! Russ and Kate have created a beautiful place by the lake and are lovely people, as is David the manager. Highly recommend a stay here!!!
Report Check-InWow, Wow, Wow! What a campsite- beautiful place to pitch your tent (for 7,000pp) under the shade of a bamboo grove. Hot showers and clean toilets. Stunning view of the lake. The castle hotel is incredible (rooms 60,000pp,). Really reasonably priced bar- and the best meal we have had in Africa. Wonderful hosts. cant reccomended this place enough. so glad we took a detour to come here.
Report Check-InA very well thought out campsite and lodge with lovely facilities. Russ the owner was great to spend some time with, and is very down to earth.
If you get the campsite on the beach, you’ll never want to leave, but beware of European prices at the bar and restaurant!
We had such a fantastic time here. The people running the place are awesome. They made us feel like five star guests, made us feel very welcome and even did an openair cinema for the kids. Fantastic place, great local kids to play with. Felt like a holiday while traveling.
Report Check-InAll the previous positive reviews are true. The setting is amazing! We stayed at the hotel, beautiful big rooms with lounge furniture, huge bathroom. Filtered drinking water available at all times. 3 guards patrolling all night. Wifi was fast. Unfortunately, the generator was not used during a blackout, which last a good part of the day as we were the only guests, fair enough. Hospitable staff, much attention was given to detail. Treat yourself.
Report Check-InAmazing place! Friendly, helpful people. Beautiful beach and swimmingpool. Hot, clean showers, good food and the best WiFi we had in a long time. 10 usd pppn. Highly recommended!
Report Check-InGreat stay at an amazing campsite on the beach. Sink and services at the sites, very nice, hot showers and clean ablutions. We cooked our own food but restaurant sounds very good. 7,000 kwacha ppn camping.
Report Check-InWonderful place! Campsite directly on beachside. Nice staff, top ablutions, braai, electricity, dish wash on every beautiful camp site.
Report Check-InGreat campsite. We had the pitch on the beach in front of the bamboo. Great, clean ablutions with an out door shower and hot water. Liked the wash up set up and the owners and staff were very friendly. Joined them for a movie in the roof they were showing that night! Excellent FREE wifi that reached the site, though requested any downloads or updates were done between 6pm and 6am... fair enough :) Couldn’t do more for us.
Food was lovely (especially the home made bread)and bar reasonably priced. Even gave us some fresh lemons from their tree :)
7000kwa pppn 10USD
Report Check-InPlease note, the castle and camp site will be closed from 23 October2020 until 15 December 2020.
I am the owner of Kachere Kastle.
Our rates were raised as we included free wi-fi, which we had previously sold vouchers for.
Thank you everyone for your feedback. THE PRICE HAS BEEN RETURNED TO 7,000 Malawi kwacha, with complimentary wi-fi!!!
We left because they raised the price. 10.000 MKW/14$ ppn just for camping. It was not negotiable. The owner told us that the new price is since first of january. We showed I Overlander and that people paied in beginning of april 10$. He said it can not be.We had the feeling that they dont want to have budget travellers any more who may cook by themselves and just pay for accomadation. Almost 28 $ for camping for 2 person without breakfast is way overpriced!!!
Not nice because we arrived when it was almost gwtting dark!
Beautiful place, well maintained, very friendly staff. But expensive. The price has been raised 25%. You now pay 10,000 kwacha pppn (13,75 USD). The creditcard machine didn’t work, so if you go there bring lots of cash.
Report Check-InExcellent place to relax a few days!
The camping spots all have fire pits, running water, electricity and lights.
Owners are super nice people.
10 USD pppn. Visa cards accepted.
Report Check-InGreat beach camping setting with lots of thought into overlanding facilities. We had a dedicated member of staff (named Zimbabwe) looking after us (bringing wood, cushions for the chairs etc)! Lovely fire pit, bamboo area to camp, amazing showers - hot and great pressure & a cool pool and bar area. Owners are both absolutely lovely. Highly recommend.
Report Check-InWe wanted to stay but unfortunately closed till 11/3/19. Pity i think it can be a nice stay.
Report Check-Inawesome location and facilities, worth staying a few days and just relaxing, good bar and food, I'll be returning again as I enjoyed my last stay when travelling up north of Malawi, only noticed my views were not on ioverlander hence why now
Report Check-InAmazing place well worth a few days here! Such a cool place great camp on the beach with individual sink, cook station and power point. Full sized squash court too. Dinner we feel was overpriced and we’ve had better meals elsewhere for a lot less.
Report Check-InMysterious castle on the beach, camping in bamboo forest, very nice ablutions. Spots with water, BBQ, socket, counter and sink. Big shout-out to Russell, his wife, the staff and other guests while our car developed an electrical fault. Thank you all! Absolutely recommendable
Report Check-InGood campsite with friendly staff, right by Lake Malawi, excellent beach. Camping pitches, dormitory’s (MK 8,000) and chalets.
Paid MK 35,000 for en siute chalet with breakfast overlooking beach. Chalets also available for MK 25,000. Camping and dormitory ablutions all new with hot water electricity and a secure space for storage. Lots of parking, beach bars and good restaurant.

Enjoyed the camping here next to the castle, ablution blocks good and clean. The usual Malawi power cuts happening. Power points and lights to the campsite. Could buy Skyband internet bundles. Swimming in the lake not great but they have a nice pool, unfortunately it was green when we were there due to the power cuts and not been able to run the pump long enough. Owners and staff very friendly and supplied us with solar lights.
This castle is builded by a Britsch couple approx 10 years ago and since 2 years its running.
They have a few rooms, suits and campsite spots. A few of them has a view over the beach and lake. In the middle of the castle lays a big swimmingpool, a bar and restaurant.
We parked our car at the beach, what an amazing spot!
The spot has braai facilities, own sink, electricity point, fire pit and the surface is flat.
Nice clean and new (trendy!) abulution with 2 toilets and 2 showers in the bamboo forest. The showers are very nice because they are open and has warm water.
You can buy a winebottle for around 10 dollar and diner is 20 dollar for a 3 course menu.
The price for the campsite is 10 dollar pppn.
This is a nice spot to spend a few days.
Absolutely loved this place - everything as below, magical shower, a wonderful peaceful place. $7pp camping including power. Still issue with power but owner bought us extra lamps during the power cut- very nice of them. Can buy eggs & bacon from them too.
Report Check-InEverything said below is true, but the place is so great we wanted to confirm. Beautiful campsite; check. Awesome and amusing castle setting; check. Fantastic staff; check. Stunning food from the kitchen; check. Owners that make you feel like you’re visiting them at their own home; heck. They even wave to you as you pull away! What a rad place that we hope everyone enjoyed as much as we did.
Report Check-InThis place is so great. Quite funny but in the best way. Sandy site between the bamboo but shady and the bathroom is ace! Lovely open air shower 🚿Owners are super nice and accommodating despite us not calling ahead. Worth calling ahead if you want to stay in the hotel as, with everywhere in Malawi, electricity is unreliable and causing them some issues. They're hoping to get off grid quickly.
Report Check-InWe also enjoyed the Kastle very much. Camping Area next to the Castle between beautiful Bamboo. The Beach with almost white Sand was the best we had so far in Malawi (we liked it much more then Monkey Bay or Senga Bay). So far it also was the most relaxed and most quite Place in otherwise crowded and busy Malawi. The Owners are a cool Couple, very friendly and relaxed with a good Taste in Music. Nice mid sized Pool with Pool Bar that offers a Variety of Drinks and a decent Selection of Single Malt Whisky :) Hammocks and nice Deck Chairs with Shadow around the Pool and on Beach. Good Ablutions, Water and Dish Washing Area, Braai Pit, Fire Pit and free Electricity at Sites. Wifi is Skyband. Occasional Power Cuts. Best Campground so far in Malawi. The only Downside were thousands of very small Ants (they go everywhere but you can deal with them). We paid 7.000 MWK (8 Euro) pppn.
Report Check-InWe thought this place was quite funny and worth the visit! A massive new castle in the middle off Malawi. You will get a luxury feeling at this place, with the nice swimming pool, bar and sun chairs. The food is expensive (15000 MK pp for dinner) but also very luxurious and sooo good!! You'll get a 3 course dinner, in the afternoon you can choose between different ones. The campsite is a nice place in a little bamboo forest with nice toilets and showers and everything said before!! The hospitality by the owners and their staff is great.
Camping 7000 MK pppp
Indeed a well maintained, spacious, clean and great castle. Great setting, one of the best campingspots we had so far.
Lovely campsite inbetween bamboo alongside the beach/lake.
Friendly and spontaneous owners and staff.
Great hot showers with good water pressure. Nice pool, bar and restaurant.
We paid K7100,- per person per night. WIFI is good, vouchers for up to 2GB for K5000,-. every new day the First 100MB login with FB is free which is enough to update on the phone for 20 minutes.
Report Check-InWe are the owners.
Independent overlanders very welcome. Also motorbikes. Pool is available if not busy with hotel guests. Please ask; we will try to help.
Well equipped garage and inspection pit if you have a niggling problem!
Surreal castle with beautiful private beach. Rooms (incl tower suite!). Nicely set up campsite with private brai / power / sinks for each pitch. Modern ablutions incl open-air showers. You won't find anything else like this in Eastern Africa!
