There are 3 sort of places to stay near the end of paved spur Rd 406 and 3 pins on the map, but there seems to be some confusion about what is or isn't free.

1. The northernmost location is the obvious NRA pay campground with picnic structures, grills and pit toilets. Appear to be 5 sites with pay station. $6/night
2. The middle location is down the dirt road on the left after the last site and privy. There are carsonite posts designating the area for camping. According to the sign at the pay station, this is the primitive camp area and is still $6/night. There are about 3 or 4 unmarked spots.
3. The southernmost area is a small pulloff near the literal end of the road by the lake. According to the sign at the pay station, camping is only allowed in designated areas within Amistad NRA.

From other comments, there seems to be minimal/sporadic enforcement. You be the judge.

if like us, you're pulling a trailer or fifth wheel, there are a few spots right at the entrance that are big enough to accommodate you, with covered picnic tables. Further down the road is for wild camping and trailers are not allowed. 6 dollars per night, 3 if you have the senior pass, payment is by machine now.

it's a pullout from a dirt road with great views, there is a little road noise from the main road, no traffic on the dirt road at night, a few people passed by in the morning and waved they were not bothered by us

disperse sites are NOT free. bothered by ranger in the morning

took the boon docking space. to reach these hidden spots take the dirt road to the left after the last vault toilet and drive on for a couple hundred feet.
nice and secluded spots here. no access to the lake from here.

Some ok spots near the washroom (for a fee). We opted to stay down the dirt road (after the outhouse). It’s free and more secluded. Lots of firewood in the dry river bed. Saw armadillos, deer, and lots of birds. Coyote at night. Lovely FREE spot for a 1 night stop over.

Great place wild camping available off the main road.

There are some NICE dispersed sites down a dirt road just past the main developed camp sites. Super quiet. Tons of wildlife. Near the water. Excellent!

Report Check-In

Easy access off Hwy 90.

Very quiet and decent sites for $6. Most sites had covered picnic tables and were pretty level.

A dirt road just past the outhouse leads to a few free sites. A bit rocky but ourClass B made it just fine.

I generally avoid to pay to park for the night, but for only 6$ I'll stay at least two nights. It was dark when I arrived, but I'm happy with the primitive spot I found at 29.5515, -101.0154. On Google Maps it looks like its in the water (in plan view), but it's not (take a look at satellite view). I saw more goats than humans! Got at most 2 bars of cell reception on AT&T network : worked just fine most of the time, but sometimes took longer to connect.

Now $6 per night;) Envelope system at gate. Camp sites back from the water maybe by 0.5 mile. Beautifully peaceful! We are the only ones here;)
