Description

Corrupt police stopped us, wanted passports, vehicle documents inc TIP (Temporary import paper) & looked inside the van, taking boxes etc apart. Aggressive & not happy that we had a right hand drive vehicle. Asked for a document to say that the right hand drive was ok. We said the Aduana at the Brazilian Paraguay border had given us the TIP and said that the right hand drive was not a problem. Local vehicles were being stopped & checked too but only for a few minutes. Kept us there for 1 1/4 hours in baking sun, saying things like "do you want me to mess you up?", "what are you going to leave us in the gift box?", "the camera will do you no good" & "what happens if you are 'attacked' by another police patrol?" (their translation package's words) etc. Wanted to impound the vehicle. Asked for $1000. They said we'd bribed the Aduana for the TIP! We'd passed so many police stops, luckily without being stopped, by this time and knew we'd be stopped again so we decided in the end to ask if we could turn around and return to Brazil which we did. NOT a good advertisement for the country.

Still there but we weren't stopped. We usually stay behind a truck when driving through these checkpoints.

From Asuncion to Iguazu. Less Policia. No problem.

Report Check-In

The checkpoint is still here and we were pulled over. The serious officer asked for our identification and vehicle permit, and a lot of questions about where we were going, why, and when. Eventually asked to see the back of the van, we opened it one door at a time because there were 3 officers inspecting by that point. They kept looking at our Texas plates. I am a native Spanish speaker and remained friendly and respectful hoping they would send us on our way, making small talk about Paraguay and Puerto Rico (my home country). They spoke in Guarani to each other and then said, have a good day and be safe. So that was it. But be careful, it did feel like they were fishing for trouble.

No check up or stop for our van.
Policemans was here but peaceful under trees drinking mate.
Let’s continue !

Agree with the last comment here. They were present but did not stop us. From our experience from other checkpoints one should try to stay polite and respectful. Pretend to not speak or understand Spanish and smile :) We had never had any problems, they lose interest for a bribe when you remain friendly and act not understanding if needed.

Watch out when you're travelling solo.

I was driving this road solo on my motorcycle and trying to avoid some holes in the road. At one point I crossed the line to the other line and a few meters further there was police. The stopped me and why extremely aggresive.

They started screaming to me at very close distance and yelling that the fine would be extremely expensive. I explained them that I was just avoiding the holes in the street, but they didn't seem to care. At one moment I told them I would pay the fine if they would give me one, but only at the police station. They asked me if I would be able to pay the fine at the police station or if I had to go to an ATM before. Out of a reflex I took some money from my motorcycle suit which is within reach. Before I realized what happened, they snatched the money from my hand and yelled that I should continu. When I said I wanted my money back first and that I would pay at the police station, one of them took his gun out and told me to continu if I didn't want more problems.
Of course I continued.

At the next police station, more or less 30 min further, I stopped to press charges. The police was very difficult and complaining that it would take a lot of time and all. They decided to call the guy and hear his story. He took from me more or less 200.000 guarani, but told to his colleagues that he only took 100.000. After 20 minutes discussing the amount, they gave me back 150.000 for "gas".
Took the money and left for Brazil.

We also encountered corrupt police somewhere on this route (not this place though but further west). They wanted to fine us for wearing flipflops when driving, saying they would take us to the police station for the fine (which would have been fine for us because 1: we didn't believe there is a law about flipflops and driving tuin a country where every motorrider rides without helmet and 2: we did not have the feeling they were really going to take us to the police station anyway, but were just after a bribe.) Don't pay, just have a friendly chat and when they realize they'll not get their bribe they'll let you go. Luckily these guys were not agresive as happened to the travellers in the original post. Other police that stopped us before on this route were just extremely grumpy.
