Description

Ferry terminal to go to Zanzibar. You may reserve online but don’t have to.

Do not trust the ticket agents on the street. Go straight to official counter in the terminal (with your confirmation number from online registration if you did that). You still need to pay in person with cash. Bring US dollars ($35 ppn for economy, $40 for business) if you can as they will charge slightly more for shillings with an office exchange rate

The online form will tell you to arrive 3 hrs advance. Not at all necessary. We arrived an hour and half before sailing.

Bring passport and yellow fever card. Both are needed at the Zanzibar immigration.

still 35$ per adult (cheaper to pay in cash in dollars, even it is possible to pay by visa in schillings but the exchange rate is bad).
4 ferrys per day (7:30am/9:30am /2:30pm/ 4:30pm).
you dont need a fixer, enter in the building with your passport.
2 hours.
they advised you to arrive 30 minutes before.you can buy the day before or the same day.

there is a slow ferry some days of the week at 20$ but it is going at 9pm and arrive at 5am in Zanzibar and we didnt feel safe to travel at these hours.

It’s still US$ 35 the economy seat (but is more expensive if you pay in TSh: 100k). There’re a lot of guys trying to sell tickets in the region, and don’t trust them. We didn’t find the Flying Horses (cheaper and longer), so we traveled by Azam in both way.

It’s not as bad as others might have implied. Just avoid the touts outside with reflective vests. Have your passport/yellow fever cert for zanzibar immigration although they don’t normally ask. 35usd for an economy ticket.
You don’t need to book tickets in advance nor do you need to arrive 3hrs in advance, just show up to the ticket booth and pay. Azam is the fastest company at the moment so it’s highly recommended; it takes roughly 1.5 hours and leaves approximately 20 minutes from the advertised departure time.

There are two companies that operate.

We took the cheapest ferry to reach Zanzibar at 12:30 (flying horse =20$ ppn)
it took 3 hours, just one hour more than the more expensive company (name i forgot? )
I think flying horse is just going once a day from Dar to Zanzibar (12:30am) and back just night ferry (21:00pm) (couldn't find website)
On the way back we took night ferry which means leaving at 21:00 Zanzibar and getting to Dar about 6 am in the morning (20 $ ppn). The overnight drive was okay and with ear plugs and warm clothes :-) (because of aircon) we could sleep good enough.
With flying horse you travel as a foreigner always in vip aircon area with big seats and enough space to stretch you legs.

In Zanzibar it was possible to leave our luggage at the ticket office of flying horse at the habour to be able to walk around. Very nice because our plan was to leave midday but prices where to high with the other company and we switched plans.

If you want to go in different times with the other company it is better to book at least one day in advance to save money. It was always booked out for economy class when you just show up. Then you have to buy vip ticket for 50 $ ppn instead of 35$. They have a website were you can book online and see the timetable. They leave around 4 or 5 times a day.

Walked up and bought a ticket for the next ferry, leaving 30 minutes after. Just pass all the touts outside.

35 USD for economy class, 40 for Business. Unsure what the difference is as they were out of economy tickets.

Don’t forget your yellow fever card or passport if you leave the car in Dar. They will check it in immigration in Zanzibar.

Don't forget to take your yellow vaccination card! If you don't have it they will send you back from Zanzibar.
We choosed Flying Horse (it's at the port just next to the office of this main company) for 20$ pp. You are allowed to sit in VIP part which is fine, don't expect fireworks but you have a lot of space, air condition and it's enough for 3 hours. We think it's worth saving those 15$ one way because Zanzibar is expensive.

You can leave your car on church parking. Just ask the priest about it. Price for one day was 5$.

Report Check-In

At the moment the economy class for foreign costs 35$. For my motorbike I paid 38$ (talk directly with mr.Zaki)
