Something not right?

Description

Fantastic spot to camp under the palm trees on the dunes. 800Ksh pppn for residents/1000Ksh pppn non-residents—only Rolf, the host, can reduce the price—we paid 500Ksh pppn since we were staying several days. Shower is warm. Spring water in resort. Some locals, but they go away quickly if you want them to. If they don’t, the staff will help. Cold beer available at the pub and tasty meals at the restaurant. A fresh fish seller comes by most days. You get a shower and toilet for your personal use.

Latest Check-Ins

We had a wonderful stay here. It feels like staying in an oasis after a beautiful off road ride from Lodwar.

Rolf, the owner, saw us struggling win the sand on our big motorbike and was super helpful. He took my pillion and luggage to make the ride easier for me and followed patiently as I drove the last 10km super slow. He also arranged for us to park the motorbike securely with the chief in town and gave us lift to his place (he also made arrangements to get us back to that same spot without asking for payment.

The place is absolutely NOT NEGLECTED as previous review states. They have a fully operational restaurant, which even opened before sunrise for us, super helpful staff, massage service and very nice en-suite rooms!

We chose camping and the only thing that one could say isn’t great was the toilet so we used the very clean one in the restaurant area. Shower was warm with good pressure. We camped under the sheltered hut right by the lake and it was amazing.

I was impressed by the reasonably priced restaurant. Home made bread with home made mango jam was yummy, they also have home made increceam, baguettes, make ravioli themselves.

Really this place exceeded my expectations and Rolf’s kindness and hospitality was over and beyond. We loved our short stay here!!

We’ve been here for four nights. No sign of the owner and staff have no discretionary powers to negotiate a price. They also have no system of calculating extra costs e.g bar, restaurant or laundry. So its pretty much a guessing game. After being assured we could pay by card the machine said “no SIM” so payment is a problem. All cash. There’s no maintenance being done and the grounds look a bit neglected. We enjoyed our stay. Peaceful. Showers were good. The weather was good. Boiling hot! Lots of staff milling about and they’re all friendly and helpful. Our one restaurant meal was ok. We were offered some excursions but nothing was highly recommended. The boat isn’t seaworthy.

still paradise for camping. 800 kes p.p. restaurant is serving nice meals for 1200 kes and cold drinks. power only between 10 and 17. for diner they put on the generator. great staff. good sandy dirt road to get there from Lodwar. takes around 1,5 hours. chapatis available in nearby village

Report Check-In

Amazing unique camping spot. Right on the edge of the lake in between the palm trees. Truly stunning and a reason to visit!
The lodge itself is completely run down. Due to the rising water levels 2 years ago and Covid the lodge is one big mess.
The brochure they send you with facilities and activity’s is very outdated.
WiFi works only when the power works, which was 1 out of 3 days from 11:00 till 16:00.

CENTRAL ISLAND
The trip to central island was also a disappointment. In the brochure they tell you of 3 crater lakes with huge crocodiles and flamingos and spending the night in a star tent.
It now only has 2 crater lakes, with no animals. As a couple we got 2 tiny regular tents (with holes) to spend the night. To boat got stuck and we had to dig it out for 4 hours.
Next to the fees you pay for the trip you also have to pay entrance fees and overnight fees for central island.

YES CAMPING!
I would recommend camping here (or nearby) because it’s stunning. But be self efficient and don’t expect anything from the lodges. Then it will be amazing.

WARNING
There are currently some bandits active between kitale and lodwar. So ask around!
The road is being worked on. So it takes a little longer, when it’s done it will be one great high way.

Campsite right next to the lake. Clean ablution facilities. The lodge itself looks neglected and the pool doesn’t work due to contamination from the rising lake levels. Camping charges as of May 2021 were 800ksh pppn with your own tent or Ksh. 1000 pppn with a hired tent. Trips to the islands on L. Turkana can be arranged and cost around 24,000 Ksh. Rount trip

Nice campingspot on beachsand, between palmtrees. 1000ksh pppn. Well worth it! Flush toilets and nice shower. Bar on the beach with cold beers etc. Didn’t try the food, but bought some fresh fish and firewood.

Road status: between Kitale and Lokichar perfect tarmac. After Lokichar - Lodwar the road switch between gravel (corregation) and new streches of tarmac.

We camped here for two nights. If you use your own camping gear you pay $ 10 pppn, if you use their tent it's $15 pppn. We swam in the pool, which is a bit like a dam. The water comes from the springs for the pool and showers, really nice. There is a big shady banda at the campsite with electricity to charge your fridge, would be best if you have an extension cord. We did the sunset cruise, which included snacks and a bottle of champagne at Kes 3000 pppn. This is truely an oasis after a few days of wildcamping

Report Check-In

We were a bit disappointed. The positive comments from other travellers created expectations that didn’t realise. Not so warm welcome, maybe because of the high temperatures that day, 39°C. No explanation what activities were available. We didn’t ask for food but also was not offered. We were alone. Ablutions are very basic, difficult to lock doors from inside. We didn’t stay longer than one night, It was, as always, very windy but temperatures of 33° were a bit too high

They charged 15 dollars pppn for camping so we left.

We camped on the beach, beautiful spot. Locals were fishing and cooling down in the lake. You get your own toilet and shower. Price 1000 KZS pp

Charged 1000 shillings pp/per night. Awesome spot on the beach. Drinks in the bar and air time available for purchase in the gift shop. The staff is very friendly and helpful, they even tried finding us basic supplies (milk, eggs, flour) for us in town.

Report Check-In

Staff can’t decrease the 800Ksh pppn for residents and 1000Ksh for non-residents. Rolf, the host, generously reduced the price to 500Ksh pppn since we were staying several days. We appreciated being given keys to a toilet and shower for our personal use. Although the approach to the resort begins to get more sandy about 1km before the entrance, we didn’t have to air down the tires, even when crossing deeper sand to our shoreline camp—the ever helpful staff were there guiding us! They also were there to help when local women and their children were trying to sell their handcrafts a bit too aggressively. Yes, the staff were friendly and helpful. I’ve always loved sand, shorelines and deserts. If you do too, this is your place ;-) When it’s too hot to cook, you can enjoy tasty meals at their restaurant. Note that hwy A1 is shown on maps as paved, but in reality much of the asphalt has disappeared (leaving potholes) north of Kainuk (about 20/30km north of Marich Pass)—locals can drive fast on A1, not me the first time, but I loved driving the crisscrossing paths through the desert parallel to A1 when they were available. The hwy is being rebuilt now, but completion may take awhile :-(
