Something not right?

Description

A hostel with pleasant lawn space for overlanders. Quiet enough and secure. 20,000 Ush including a decent breakfast. Friendly staff. Good location for visiting the city (but take a boda-boda, the traffic is horrible!). Big rigs might fit in the parking lot.

We passed by it at night, seemed like an abondant place…

Report Check-In

We met the owner and he told us that his place is closed. He said because of COVID.
He let us camp for one night. But the shower is not running and the toilets have no paper and they are not that clean.
Anyway for one night it was ok.

backpacker kampala, i was my first time here in 1996, it was a very busy place full of overlanders. it was a place for exchange. to repair the car, to fill up the energy tank after crossing throughcongo. today in january 2020 it just seems to be a shadow of itsef 😢.. Still an oasis in the city, wonderful green lawn, big trees. Unfortunately, hardly any visitors to talk to / exchange. The Backpackers has been completely rebuilt and is now min. half an African bar / pub with a large stage. The food and beer is good. The overnight price with 14,000 Usch / pers rooftop very fair. Toilet / shower clean and hot. But bad because the bar / reception staff are completely uninterested in guests. Internet did not go all day, despite we informed and asked for it. “Tha boss is not arround” but the boss “John” went through the venue several times. This is a pitty.

I wouldn’t call this a “backpackers” place in the sense that there are no DIY facilities; there are no places to cook, wash up dishes or wash clothes. I would rather call it a budget hotel/hostel. I was the only camper in what is quite a sizeable campsite. Camping cost 14,000 without breakfast.

One of it’s major attractions is Ibra’s motorcycle workshop at the entrance; he’s very knowledgeable and helpful.

As Kampala goes, it was quiet. The 2 showers worked, were hot and the ablutions were clean. You can get laundry done quickly for a v reasonable price. WiFi which only really reaches around the bar was useless.

The menu at the bar is varied and the food good - unless you want a juicy steak in which case it is best to arrange with management to DIY which is what I did - even if it does take quite a while to arrive. If you want an early start, don’t count on breakfast.

Staff are helpful and friendly - language barrier allowing – but inefficient in the usual African way; management on the other hand is efficient and helpful.

It’s a bit out of town, but boda-bodacious are plentiful and it will cost about 2-3,000 SH to get to town.

Nice Backpacker with Camping in the green Garden. Relatively relaxed and quite and still near to the City Center. Ablutions okay, hot Shower, free Wifi (slow to average). The Pizza in the Restaurant was not so good (still okay). Friendly Bar and lots of other Travelers. Also paid 14.000 UGX pppn.

After looking for two different guesthouses we found on booking.com but were non existent on the other side of town we were done and went here.

We finally enjoyed hot showers after the last couple of days of campingsites that promised us they had hot water but they hadn't, the struggle was real!

Nice big field of grass secured within the walls of the hostel. Enough place to lounge and enjoy the free and good WIFI.
Cheap price with Sh.14 000,- pppn (USD3.90,- pppn).
The food is alright as well, and the bathrooms clean.

Grass camping area behind bar next to Bandas. 14 000 UGX for camping without breakfast. Easy to reach from Jinja by taking Northern Bypass. We used Uber to go to a mall.

Food was a bit disappointing and their WiFi didn't work.
