Description

The park gate is roughly one hour from Paron. It closes at 5 in the afternoon and opens again at eight in the morning. So if you want to make a daytrip to the lagoon without staying overnight, be early enough to leave there again around three. S/5 is charged here for entrance.

There is space for tent camping here. The gate is open from 8am to 5pm. S/5 for day visit and S/10 if you want to camp at the top. The road up until here was almost a very nice graded dirt road. From here to Lake Paron is of course another story. No sand or steep sections, but road is rocky and full of stones. My motorcycle (DR650) took a beating going up and coming down. If definitely doable. Leaving your luggage at a hostal/hotel in Caraz is highly recommended for this ride. I camped in Hostal Casa Azul which is for motorcyclists and bicyclists.

Also slept here as we didn’t make it in time for the gate. Very quiet, not really level. We could enter around 8.30 am when the guy came to open the gate.

We also slept here the night before. No problem at all. The road after the gate is really not that bad (2wd Ford Transit) just narrow. But like said before, if you leave early enough you don't have cars coming towards you, so no problem. If you walk around the gate, there is a hole in the ground toilet. And please let the man at the gate know if you are staying at the lake or coming back.

Good spot to acclimate indeed. We camped in front of the gate alongside the road (as the gate closes around 5-6pm, there is nobody passing through during the night). Very quiet night. The national park official was very nice and said people camp here all the time. No facilities, free. The entrance to the NP at this point is 5 sol pp. We drove up around 7h30 am and had the lake all to ourselves for the first hours. Would definitely recommend the 30 minute mirador hike!

Still possible to sleep here. Very good spot to acclimate. The guard is indeed very friendly. As in December gates open around 7Am and close at 4:30Pm.
If you plan to spend the night at the Laguna please advise the guard. One couple did not and he waited for them at the gate until 6:30Pm for nothing. I don't think he is paid overtime!! He planed to make them pay the entrance fee a second time...

Wanted to avoid oncoming traffic and acclimate to elevation. So we parked just outside the gate on a wide spot. Entered in the morning as others were headed up. Have coffee to nice man at gate and a book to his daughter! Prices and hours same.

Slept here to help adjust to the elevation before going up to sleep at Paron. A very quiet night. The gate guards were very friendly. There's a super basic toilet (hole in the ground with walls around it) just on the other side of the gate.

gate was being closed at around 3:30pm this time of year

Report Check-In

We were told the gate closed at 5pm, best to confirm on your way up. Road up to this point is ok but with some rills (streams down the road) in some area. After this point is is rougher with sharp switchbacks, some clearance is needed, but we made it up with our 2x4 Sprinter no problem (7m long). S/.5 pp entrance charged by community, 3wk s/65 park pass does not apply here.

its not the best road to go up. but doable woth 2 wd. we had snow up there but in the morning we were able to drive down.

Report Check-In

I was stopped about one switchback before the park gate (tree on the road). I thought first it was a ripoff but the young muchacho had official receipts from the park and later at the official gate the ranger asked if I had paid below. So it's ok.

The three week 65s pass to Huascaran National Park does not apply here -- you still get charged since it is for the local community.
