Latest Check-Ins

Going to Botswana, everything was very easy, everything was done in 30 minutes. SA, just stamp out and a quick check of the car. Botswana side, we got stamped in (no Visa for French and US citizen) then we registered the car and paid the road tax + assurance by card (470 for a 4x4 Hilux).
Something we didnt know was that its forbidden to take fruits, vegetables and meat in the country. Thank god they didnt see our fridge but we had to throw away some apples and tomatoes. Oh well.
Very friendly people.

Report Check-In

RSA into Botswana
South Africa side:
Totally unprofessional, some guy in a yellow vest stopped us outside the gate with no identification or affiliation, wanted to know what we were carrying and if we are leaving anything in Botswana. Then wanted us to buy him food. Proceeded to the immigration office eventually where officials were rude. Got passports stamped and proceeded to the Customs side where it transpired that the guy at the gate is actually a Customs official there to provide assistance with clearing, but since he has no computer or stamps, it is not clear what he must do except maybe beg for food.
Proceeded to the last gate where we almost missed the SAPS stop as one person waved us on and another person wanted us to stop. Got the vehicle license scanned and passports checked and then told to drive very carefully up the one way lane because they could not manage the truck traffic.
We were glad to leave.

Into Botswana:
Easy and professional. Form completed, passports stamped, got a slip for the vehicle and proceeded to the BURS counter for road permits. Small sign there informs us that road taxes have more than doubled.
So now as follows for Cars/Motor Bikes:
National Road Safety Fund RSA Vehicle /valid 1 year/ BWP50
Motor Vehicle Insurance RSA Vehicle/ valid 3 months/BWP150
Road transport permit, multiple entry RSA Vehicle/BWP140
Total BWP340, paid got receipt and proceeded to the gate.
Handed over vehicle slip to friendly officials and was asked to open the vehicle and then told to proceed on into Botswana.

SA into BOTS

Very easy border crossing (in the beginning of March). We were through the border and done with both sides in less than 25 minutes (European passport). Didn't pay nothing for Botswana as we had everything paid on our way in a month earlier.
The police officers stopped us asking what we were transporting. We greeted politely, told them we only had camping stuff, did some small talk and were waved through without inspection of the vehicle.

Report Check-In

RSA to BW with RSA registered vehicle. 45 minutes:
- RSA side: stamped out passports and noted vehicle on system with same officer.
- BW side: C19 health check; proceed to building behind for: passport stamp in and then separate counter for TIP card or cash payment; present vehicle ticket to official as drive out of gate; no vehicle luggage check.

Report Check-In

Today we went through the border, it was our first border crossing from SA to Bots. Hearing stories about officers checking your car for food, meat, dairy products etc. But I most say the border crossing was FAST!

We got our stamp at immigration service (home affairs), proceeded to the exit gate of SA. Security guy asked us what we had with us but did not check! So we went on, went in to immigration service at Bots border. Filled in the application form, got a 60 day visa. And our last stop was paying a fee for 3rd party insurance, road tax, etc. It was P150.

And off we went in to Botswana.

Report Check-In

Very chilled quiet border. Smooth with no hassle.

BOTSWANA TO SOUTH AFRICA:
Botswana quick but not competent customs officers. They should not give us exit stamp in carnet because Botswana is in SA union. Next exit stamp should be done in Namibia exit (no Lesotho, no Swazi, no Botswana, no SA)! But even after long discution, her consultation with boss they told us we have to get exit stamp in Botswana. But then in SA officer told us it was their mistake! So we had to get new entry stamp in SA in new page :(
So don't stamp exit from Botswana in your carnet! safe pages.

Report Check-In

Nicely refurbished recently on the SA side

From Botswana to South Africa...

Botswana only had to get the exit stamp and write down drivers name+plate. No carnet and no question about car documents.

South Africa stamped my passport straight away, only asked me about my plate number. At customs I asked for TIP. Didn't know anything and called the boss. He told me there is nothing to get, because the first country of entering the south african tax area gave me some papers. Of course, I got a two weeks TIP when I arrived in Namibia but there is nothing stated for Botswana or SA and it was already expired.

Will see what happens after exiting South Africa...
