Description

[Moderator: actual information is present in OpenStreetMap]
You can reach this point with any vehicle, a big section from the highway to here is already paved and new bridges are being built ( now just temporary ones ) you can leave your car parked here (private $) and take a ride to the dunes.

From this point to the town you have a few muddy sections, lots of sand driving and a deep river crossing, high clearance is a must.

It's now ok road all the way to the town. There is also a new bridge allowing the acces to town, so no need for river crossing. All the bridges are now permanent. Don't go all the way till end of MA-320, but turn to what's called "Estrada Terra Batida Secundaria feita pela Prefeitura" in Maps.me. About 100 meters before this point.

Only 4X4 & high clearance any season you go especially for the river crossing. We were there August 2018 & the water was covering the tyres of the Landcruisers (the deepest point). Sand wont be a problem but the water is deep. No need for a snorkel in the dry season. They are building the road & a bridge but not sure when they will finish them. Santo Amaro is all paved (the biggest part around the centre)

We are here just now! So yes, the road is asfalt until here, no problems, we left the car in the private parking and crossed with a boat (paid 2pp for boat and 10 for a day car parking). Only 4x4 would reach the ferry, but if you go for river crossing I guess you need a snorkel during rainy season (which is now and all other roads are basically under water). In the village you can walk everywhere. We stayed in a pousada called “fe em Deus” and paid 30pp per room with single bed (50 for two if the second person sleeps in a hammock). So that’s a cheap option with breakfast. We also like to walk, so we are walking the dunes, if you have tent you can overnight there too! It’s pretty amazing. Enjoy Santo Amaro before it gets too touristy like Jericoacoara;)

As said, reachable by any vehicle. After this, there is a 4 km strech of sandy roads and a river crossing to get to the village. We managed with our smallish 4x4 pickup truck camper. At its deepest point the river was just above knee deep (locals can show you where to cross). Getting in was easy enough following the 'big' road to the river, but for getting out we got confused which way to choose and and ended up stuck in the sand for 2 hours. You cannot drive in the dunes with your own car, but you can either walk just a short way in from the village - this won't cost you anything and it gets beautiful really quickly - or take a day tour with a pickup. We arranged this in the village and paid 80 reales pp in a shared truck with 4 others. Lunch was an additional 30 reales so we brought our own. Really worth it! The landscape is amazing. Don't forget your swimming stuff. We were end of september and some of the lakes were starting to get dry, but still plenty ones with water. It's probably also possible to arrange your tour here at this point if you can't drive to the village.
