There is an access road towards the direction of a cell phone tower. This road crosses a ravine that has a road leading up. We camped up a way from the crossing. Secluded spot away from the highway didn't need 4x4. Amazing sunset.

Great spot off-road, be careful - we used 4x4 on the way back. This location is in the river bed, we stayed at the top. :) Quiet, dusty.
Report Check-InI followed the directions here. Excellent spot for when you need to get to Calama airport next morning. Not a soul all night and gorgeous sky, even so close to Calama. Gets very cold at night this time of the year. We had frost on our windows in the morning. You can hike about on the dunes and hunt for meteorites.
Report Check-InIf you’re trying to find this place at night, there is a turnoff marked “Mina access.” The road turns out nearly parallel to the highway just after this sign at (-22.5919425, -68.7054568). The road then turns right after a minute or so. We were aided by satellite view in google maps. The signal is weak here though.
Report Check-InGreat stop off en route too or from San Pedro, easy access, well hidden and don't have to go far down the ravine to feel completely isolated!
Report Check-InWe arrived here at night so had to look carefully to spot the ravine in amongst the desert. The GPS location and the ravine entrance are perpindicular to the road so not too hard to find after all. We drove 3-4km up the ravine. Was dead quiet and didn't see or hear anyone while we were there. You can continue to drive up the ravine further if desired. Would recommend.
Report Check-InIf you need a place outside of Calama this is the way to go. We went much further down the ravine for more privacy too. Great recommendation! The night sky was perfect! Did not see anyone for 12 hours. The wind died down completely around 8:30 after sunset. It was a very cold at night but we felt safe and did not have a 4x4 to get there (but follow the tracks! Do not pull off unless you see it’s not deep).
Report Check-InWe enjoyed our night here. Not totally hidden, but it's so far off the highway no one knows you're there. Super quiet and dark. Really pretty desert. We would rather stay here than in the city.
