Latest Check-Ins

as described before, a bit rundown, but okay for a stopover. new price is 200 Kwacha per person per night.

Report Check-In

A lovely campsite. No defined pitches but a case of pick a spot where you like. Very friendly owners, with a nice bar and restaurant. A very nice spot on the way to or from South Luangwa

Report Check-In

The amiable owners Ben and his wife are a mine of local knowledge and the campsite as usual offers space, shade and a peaceful environment for overlanders even if the showers and toilets are starting to look a mite dated and in need of some TLC. Big helpings of food in the pub if you want to be lazy and good local mobile phone connection.

Report Check-In

Dated, but okay. Price has gone up to 190 kw pppn.

Report Check-In

Great camp sites, nice ablutions, a nice bar and pet friendly. Very nice spot for a one night stopover.

Report Check-In

Spent 2 nights here, on the way and coming back from the park. Campsite is worth a mention, it is dated but clean, safe and at 150kwacha per adult fair priced. Hot donkey showers all day long, a nice bar area and ample camping area. We feel it deserves more credit then given here.

Report Check-In

We came back this year, and everything was basically like last year, including the price (140 K ppn). Lots of leaves on the ground, other than in other places where they were sweeping them away all day long. It is true that the water taps could use some maintenance, but shower and ablutions and warm water was fine, and the night was nicely dark and quiet.

Report Check-In

Sadly, the campsite ablutions are run down and not even basic maintenance gets done. Place was still dirty when we got there after 2pm. I appreciate that funds for extensive maintenance may still be lacking due to impact of Covid, but they need to improve how they go about it.

Report Check-In

Stayed 1 night to break the road between lusaka and south luangwa. the campsite is not maintained / run down / dirty. Showers have hot water but are not dirty / not maintained. braiis are broken. You can pitch tent in a large garden. Personel is nice and kind. Ok for one night

Report Check-In

Arrived at 14:00. Were greeted very friendly . Campsite and is clean and also very quiet . No other travellers as yet. Restaurant is open . Will definately recommend. Area surrounding camp very quiet .

Report Check-In

Probably the best bet in Chipata these days. The ablutions are very basic, but they do the job and felt fairly clean. Well priced restaurant serving delicious burgers. We were the only ones there so really nice and spacious campsite, although might feel a bit cramped once Covid is over and there are more visitors there.

Report Check-In

Spent quite a few nights here while waiting for Malawi visa application to be processed. Very reasonable priced basic rooms for 450kw inc breakfast. Bar and restaurant also well priced.

Report Check-In

An ok campsite for a stopover, but a bit overpriced. We paid 300kw and only 1 shower was working and the toilets were not clean. Hotel just down the road offers rooms for less. The owners were not very welcoming and we got the impression they lost their passion for the campsite and were just putting in minimum effort. The staff that takes care of the campsite was very friendly and tried to make the most of it. We were allowed to use the restaurant kitchen which is was a big plus.

Awesome campsite with rooms, bar and resturant.

Camping 150kwa (7USD) pppn

We paid 300kwa (14USD) per room (double or 2 singles) with ensuite shower and toilet.

Good bar as well with local beers 15kwa (0.75USD) and a 500g t bone cooked perfectly for 230kwa (10USD).

Definately recommended!

Report Check-In

We stayed here in a chalet for K600. The room was comfortable and clean. We had a wonderful dinner in the restaurant. A great place to stop in Chipata.

Report Check-In

After many nights of bushcamping and guesthouse rooms, it was a pleasure to stay at a "real" campsite again, at a reasonable price (150 kw ppn) and even with bar and restaurant. We left twice and came back twice after getting supplies and spare parts in Chipata, and stayed for 3 nights in total. Friendly senior owners, staff and dogs, and good cooking (everything cooked fresh when ordered). Also a place to meet other travelers, even in these times...

Report Check-In

We were very happy to find this place after the chaos of Chipata. As previously described it felt like an oasis just out of Chipata. We stayed on our way to South Luangwa.

Report Check-In

It is like an oasis after a rough drive from Muyombe. We are the only people tonight. Quiet and peaceful. We ordered T-bone from the restaurant and the chef cook it to perfection. We are glad to support them during the trying COVID 19 times where travellers are few. Hot showers and clean toilets. Very basic but adequate. Beatrice was welcoming. We enjoyed our stay!

Report Check-In

Basic campiste, rather neglected with braai falling apart. Ablutions basic but clean. No hot water. Sports bar, nice full English bfast for 40kwacha. By far the most unfriendly owners we met after 3 months of touring Africa (came to the bar as we were waiting for bfast, we were alone and they didn't even say hello to us). At least 5 dogs, one of them peed on our tent so be on the lookout. Paid 138.50 kwacha pppn.

Report Check-In

Some feedback after my previous entry. Was not so peaceful after all. The people living there constantly hoot impatiently for someone to come open the gate all the time. It is very annoying. Showers doesn't drain but water is hot. Cleaning of toilets isn't a huge priority. Food is tasty but didn't like that they put chicken skin and everything else of a chicken on the chicken pizza. Quite fine for an overnight stay and the best option around. Stayed 3 nights and never met anyone except the barman.

Report Check-In

Neat camp with braai area, restaurant and bar. Was peaceful and shady with a plug in point near the rooms, fireplace area or ablutions. We decided to stay the weekend and not drive on a Saturday. Glad we did.

Report Check-In

Lovely campsite under trees and very quiet. Showers and toilets. All very pleasant.

Report Check-In

The price has gone up, 102 kwz pp. Hot showers, toilets. Nice for a one night stop over.

Report Check-In

This was a nice place to stay over, very secure with good fasilities and bar, got loads of advice from the owner on the border crossing, very helpfull.

Report Check-In

As described before. There are a few sockets where you can plug in, at the ablution block and at the bar. No electricity at sites.

Report Check-In

Quiet place after an easy border crossing from Malawi, Kw80 for camping, hot showers and great burgers! Great stopover for a night and for those wanting a bar with some rugby on tv this is an easy place. Wifi is Kw25 per 1gig and its fast and working!

Report Check-In

We stayed one night after border crossing coming from malawi. Overland truck was there but it was no problem because the area is big enough to find a quit place. 8$ or 96 Kwacha which was a good exchange rate at that time.
We liked that place.

Report Check-In

All was clean when we stayed here. showers were hot, WiFi was working (you need to buy a voucher), food was good. 8 USD pppn.

Report Check-In

Nice campsite, quiet and rural from town, could do with a slight update on loos and showers as they seem neglected, good food and well stocked bar

Report Check-In

It’s a good stopover in Chipata. We were the only ones. It was 80 kwacha per person. You can choose your spot. Clean ablutions with hot showers.

Report Check-In

Mama Rulas was a perfect spot for a stopover when coming or going to Malawi. Green with a lot of shadow, good food, good bar, shower was Africa hot, facilities clean, no problem to fill up our watertanks. 👍

Note: At the Engen Fuel Station in Chipata you can pay with credit card.

Report Check-In

Overpriced and overcrowded. We shared the campsite with three Overland trucks, therefore very loud and busy. The area was a little bit dirty and smells bad because of the dogs around. ZKW 120pppn

Report Check-In

Okay place for a stopover of 1 night. Currently no internet available. Good food in restaurant, but insane large portions (i.e rumpsteak of 1 kg per per portion, which we obviously shared and it was still way too much). 90kw pppn.

Report Check-In

Bit Run down. Showers and Toilets have. seen better days. Camping OK for One night. 90 KW pp. no Internet.

Report Check-In

Not really a great place but ok for one night, price 90 kwacha

Report Check-In

Very pleasant stop over to Malawi. Secure, beautiful campsite. Friendly staff.

Report Check-In

Make sure you camp in the far corner, so you won't be annoyed by the overlanders.
They have a washing machine if you need some things properly washen.
If you into Rugby, then this is definitely the right place to end up for watching the games.

Report Check-In

Campsite down a track, camping under trees, when we were there (only guests) they had just watered the grounds and it was very muddy. Very basic ablutions, we were told which shower to use as only one had hot water, decent bar where he had the FA Cup final on TV. Camping 90kw pppn, decent stop over on way to South Luanga NP

Report Check-In

Drive through the overlander area to the corner of the site. There it is much nicer and quieter.

Report Check-In

Nice and quiet location under trees, facilities lousy
