A beautiful island and worth a stay. It is a little mismanaged though as they have pitches which are not really promoted or used, and you are told you can camp wherever you like. But I would recommend a walk around the island, and to get up super early and watch the sunrise, stunning. also, there is a historical site on the island, so worth a visit/read up. Just remember, it's cash only at the gate, no cards.

A very soecial place indeed - and defenitely worth the drive out here. Road can be tricky - sandy and bumpy on some sections and after rain muddy to unpassable. Infracstructure ob the camsites very basic (obly drop toilets). Paid P 143.64 for two people, P 248.60 for camping. Added map of drive to island and of island with all campsites as it is a little confusing.

Report Check-In

Lovely view of the pan.
This is however not one of the 13 official Camp sites at the Island. We were requested by Lebo the manager to move to one of the official campsites for the next evening.

Report Check-In

The drive in from the direction of Lethakane, along the pan is wonderful and fairly easy. Loved camping on the island, had a chance to scramble around the rocks and get the views! super sunsets and sunrise. We had a pan side camp which I recommend. Firepit and a few long drop toilets scattered around the campsite but it's not about the facilities here it's about the pan and the stars!!

Report Check-In

Very expensive for wild camping ($506pula) , dirty drop loos and the sites were covered in rubbish. Maybe we were here the wrong time of year? The sunset and sunrise are nice but you can see just as good in other places. It’s a long dusty drive and then if it’s windy it’s very very dusty at the site. This is one of the most expensive places we stayed and our least favourite.

Report Check-In

this is the only place where you are allowed to camp on Kubu Island. basically you pay to be allowed to do wild camp, there is no facilities on the island. But this place is so magical it's definitely worth it! A highlight in our 10 months travel in Africa. the most beautiful sunset with huge baobabs and the view on the pan, don't miss it!
ps: there is a beautiful diversity of birds, offer them water and enjoy the show.

Our 3rd visit to this amazing place, and not last. Most beautiful sunrise you will ever have. Campsites extremely basic, but worth the tranquility. Can get busy, so best to book in advance. We paid: p100pppn adults and p50pppn kids. Entrance fee+levy is p53pp. All excl 14% VAT. Firewood available at camp for p20 per bundle.

Report Check-In

Very basic camp site with dirty pit toilets scattered around, yet kubu island and pans are breath taking. Nearer to drive ftom lethnakane then nata

Report Check-In

Pans with the island of rock and baobabs offers something different. No water and wood. Campsites are spread out and you can pick out the one you like. Was there over a weekend and had some city dwellers come try there hand at camping. Had loud music till 02:30 am. Very unpleasant. Also had a lot of foot traffic through our camp as people want to walk on the pans. Suggest camping away from the pans closer to the rock ridge if you want privacy. Was not the best night of camping but think we where unlucky. Will visit again

Report Check-In

Primitive camping without anything except pit toilets in a nice landscape overlooking Sowa Pan with some nice Baobabs on the Island. Crossing the pan to the island was not possible after one heavy rain. Access from Nata and through the bush to Lekhubu Island on the north access track was ok, the track to the south was muddy and slippery in places but doable without risk to get stuck. So by far the worst part at wet conditions is crossing the pan to the Island from the main track - but then you can use the northern detour. No cell phone signal.

very nice setting, only amenity is drop toilets, nice staff. wild camping prohibited, they do patrol around the island in the evening to loof for trespassers. camping here githe opportunity to walk around the scenic landscape at sunset and sunrise.

One and Only Camper
We took the road from Gweta from the north towards the Kubu Island. The road is overgrown and sandy. Not recommended for caravans. We arrive at the office with two helpers in attendance. The office area was dirty with rubbish laying around. Campsite 6 is the best with a view over the pans. The island is very interesting with lots of baobab trees and a 13 century stone wall. Price for SADC tourists P180 pppn. Lovely sunset and sunrise. Only pit toilets, no water.

Amazing place. Peaceful, rough and beautiful. Bring everything you need and stay for a few nights - it’s good for the soul.

Report Check-In

We stayed at campsite # 2 which had fantastic shade, and if you can fit in behind the big trees, very private as well. There is a pit toilet, that was relatively clean during our stay, and a simple fire pit. Fantastic setting and worth the stop in our books.

From the office to the island, it took us 2hours on what we found to be a reasonably good dirt road.

Report Check-In

Peaceful place with amazing sunset and sunrise. Great views with baobabs and pan. Listening the silence during the sunrise was wonderful.

Report Check-In

What a lovely place. the road is bad and there are no fasilities. This is really a nice place to see and visit, go ruff and do it.

Report Check-In

Great place... Great views all round the hill.. But the camping site offers very little view.. Except Campsite No 6..

this is just an information for people who just want to visit Kubu Island without camping: we came in at the gate just after Makgadikgadi Adventure Camp, very friendly guy at the gate, told us where to go and didn't ask for money etc. we drove to Kubu Island, around the island and through the campsite, didn't see a single person there. drove back to the same gate as we had to drive to Nata for diesel, again didn't pay anything. So a free day trip to Kubu Island.

Report Check-In

It’s a wild camp which you pay a lot to stay at, but it’s an incredible location! We got there and found no one around apart from other campers. We chose a spot on the opposite side of the island to the campsite as it had a much nicer view etc. It wasn’t until the evening that someone came for money and told us we should have pitched were we did! We apologised! Anyway amazing view amazing night sky and just peace, utter silence! We paid 730 pula for 3 people for one night. must bring water with non-available

You can buy your permit for Kubu Island here. You get a receipt.
We payed 123 pula per 2 people (50 pp entrance fee and 5 pp view deck + 12% vat)

Camp site prepared, under trees. Facilities under construction.

Permits to be bough at Kubu Island Office at Matshumo. Also you can pay for camping there.
61p per permit - 237 with a day camping.

Report Check-In

The island with the giant baobabs are simply magical and unique in the world. Well worth the fees. Yes there are no facilities apart from overflowing long drops that smell horrible, but the views and the sunsets and stars are amazing.

Report Check-In

very nice camping. spot 6 and 12 look out over de salt pan. People were very friendly. Take your own water with, they have little water on the island. There is no showers.

Superb place with magic sunset and - rise

Report Check-In

They have fixed prices for visiting or sleeping at the island. We paid 479,20 pula for 2 person and the car.
For us it was a good experience!

Report Check-In

239 pula pp. Long drop toilets, No water.

Report Check-In

We didn't stay because the camping is an exorbitant 336 pula per person for internationals, with few facilities. A day visit was 84 pula each which is also too expensive given they don't have any interpretive panels or brochures explaining what you are supposed to be looking at. Nice place but well overpriced.

Report Check-In

A mystic place! Take your time and see the Baobabs on the rocky island. Also, a jog in the morning around the island is something special (3,2 km). Paid 240 Pula pPpN, which is overpriced for the not so well run campsite.

Report Check-In

fantastic location bud expensive, sac 156 pula pp (nternationals: double price!)
