Russia to Mongolia
Russian side straightforward and easy but, if you have a lot of people before you, it can be time consuming. First car check and then passport control. Nothing to pay. Just wait in your car and follow the others when they move. For us it took 1 hours (mid-day time).
Mongolian side is not so clear. First you have to stop at a container where they register your car and give you a slip of paper. Then you go to pay the "disinfection" fee (there's no disinfection at all but also locals pay it) 2000 MNT cash or rubles. If you skip this you don't have a stamp required later. Then you drive to customs check (vehicle inspection and some little paperwork) and passport control (data in the system and stamp). Nothing to pay here either (Italian passport, 30 day visa free entry).
After that you will be stopped to buy insurance. We negotiated a bit and ended up paying around 18 USD for 30 days (2000 cc engine but he wrote 1000). You can also change money here or buy sim card but we didn't. And that's all, nobody asked for a road tax or similar.

Easy, but very time consuming border crossing. It took us 7 hours in total, most of it waiting in line. This was our third time crossing into Russia, and it was by far the easiest and where they were the least critical of us. Everything was very very slow as they checked all cars (especially Mongolians’) very thoroughly, and the temporary car import took forever.

First, we waited in line to be allowed into the border area, then out of Mongolia, which was also slow. After that, we continued to the Russian border. First, there is a small quick passport check where you will get a laminated red number to put in your car. Then you park the car in line and go to the “real” passport check. No questions asked for us. After the check you exchange the laminated red number with the same number, but now in green.

Then, we continued to customs. It was very slow, but easy and the officers were helpful. We had to put our bags outside the car, and then one of us went inside the customs building where we filled out the customs documents. Then the officer went out to inspect the car and some of our bags. It was pretty superficial. After some copying and scanning of documents, we were done and allowed to enter.

Longest bordercrossing in our nearly 2 years RTW trip! Only Switzerland was worse!
Took us 6 hours to cross from Mongolia to Russia.
Mongolian side was very straight-foreword, but as russian side only lets 5-6 cars in per block, it took us 3 hours to only get to the russian side, sitting around and waiting for the Russians to open the gate.
On the russian side they asked us to take e-v-e-r-y-thing out of the van. They checked for medicine (we showed what we had and it was ok), then checked engine/chassis number, opened all boxes.... all very friendly with a happy dog checking the empty van :-)
All nationalities and cars were treated the same.
Strange: I crossed this same border in 2016 and it took maybe 1,5 hours in total, same direction.
Bring drinks, food, a good book or a few movies on your phone. Toilets in russian customs building.

Took us about 3 hours to enter Mongolia here.
The Russian side is a mess, everybody is trying to go in front of you..
First you have to go to the custom office which is located on the 2nd floor on the left of the vehicule inspection area. If you are going out of Russia you don't have to fill a form, just take all your papers with you and try to stay in the line and don't let people pass before you. This process took us about 1 hour.
Then it is time for the inspection of the vehicule. Just wait for the officers to come by and follow the instructions. It was quick for us (motorcycles).
Finally you can move on to the last passport check on the Russian side which is 100m further. Park your vehicule under the next building, even if there are big red forbidden signs (took us a while to understand that). Very quick check here, nothing major.

Welcome to Mongolia.
Park right after the first gate, there is an officer inside the little building on the left. You will have to deal with vehicule registration here. Took us 40 minutes for 2 bikes.
Rhen park under the first high roof building. You will be directed to the building on the left. Standard check (vehicule passport, your passport etc..).
After that there is a booth with some official ladies asked us to pay for a disinfection fee. It was 60 Russian roubles per bike. Of course they didn't disinfect anything...still not sure if it was really official.
Then it is time for the vehicule inspection. Nothing unusual here, standard check.
Finally you can go to the last gate (with a last paper check) and enter Mongolia.
Beware, if someone ask you to pay a tax just after the border, ignore him. We didn't understand what was this tax about and chose to ignore it.

On our way back from Mongolia to Russia it took us seven hours (!) to cross the border. There weren’t many cars or travelers but the custom officers took their job very serious and checked every car in detail. Paperwork took a lot of time. The dog‘s control was much faster - one photo and a stamp in the dog‘s passport- ready!

Plenty of money changers walking around before the border. Their rate (MNT to RUB) was better than the rate at Golomt Bank in Sukhbaatar.
