First he told us that for our van 2000 cc it was 2100 rubles (~ 23$, we didn't have MNT). We negotiated a bit and ended up paying ~ 18 USD for 30 days (he wrote 1000cc on the policy). You can also change money here or buy sim card but we didn't.

It was the worst border control we've had. Nothing on the Russian side, very proper and respectful, they checked the medicines. Mongolian side was the rudest and the most unfriendly people we've ever seen. We arrived at around 6am in the morning and were able to enter Mongolia at 8 am, although there were no cars and no people in front of us. We had to pay road tax of 10000 for our Toyota LandCruiser, around 45 USD (122000) insurance.

Disinfection MNT2000 and road tax MNT6000 for motorcycle. Insurance MNT24800 (~USD9) for 60 days. Fee-free ATM after immigration and disinfection fee collection but no visible money changers. They accepted a handful of ruble coins (~RUB65, =~MNT2700) instead of MNT2000 for disinfection.

Road tax and insurance are after ATM, and cash only. Rubles accepted for insurance at a slightly better rate than MNT but not sure about road tax.

We paid 24000 mnt per motorcycle for 1 month insurance (couldn't just get 10 days, it's 1 month minimum).
Check the price on the insurance paper, you shouldn't pay more than that.

Also beware, just after the last check and before the insurance office, a lady stopped us and wanted us to pay a tax. Since we couldn't understand what was this tax about, we thought that it was a scam and just ignored her.

After customs and checkpoint with bar next station is road tax: 22000 for truck Iveco 90-16, last station on left: insurance for 30 days app 43 EUR or aquivalent in mnt or rubles. only cash, no credit cards, friendly and fast; all over 4 hours.
On main road to UB several toll points: only cash

I don’t know where these ‘friendly’ people are that others speak off, but these were the rudest people I’ve come across to date. It was 1am and clear we just wanted to leave - we first had to pay a 10,000 tax but they wouldn’t explain what for - then, they told us we had to pay for insurance but nobody was in the office. We waited 10 minutes, they told us we could go, but then as we went to drive out again, they started asking for insurance and how it was illegal to drive without - clearly asking for a bribe. Hugely messed around and nobody had any idea what was going on. Eventually let us out without insurance but we had to pay 10,000 MNT for ‘road tax’ or something...

Arrived at 02.24 in the morning. The office is just before exiting the gate to Mongolia (after last passport-check). Clearly signed ‘office’. Office was pitch black but border guard signaled to wait, closed the gate, called someone and at 02.33 we drove into Mongolia with insurance. Paid little less then 64.000 for one month. No card, there’s a bankomat in the immigration-building (only visa and mastercard, no maestro). You can probably pay in rbl.
